In and Out of Time:

@ana_ct_teles asked the renowned abstract painter Frank Bowling to suggest a painting of his that she could copy. Teles' PhD study opens doors on to our understanding of artists' relations to art history, authenticity and what notions of copying conjour in the minds of contemporary artists and their audiences.

It was a stroke of genius on Bowling's part to request that Teles recreate a lost painting from an early period in his long career. An old slide from Bowling's archive becomes Teles' foggy half-lit gateway to another time and another world. Through her reimagining of the painting 'Lent' we are brought a little closer to that world; a time in 1963 when a young and ambitious painter saw it as his duty to imaginatively tangle world events with the wish to assimilate the very best of British figurative painting coming out of London.

The painting is dark, kaleidoscopic and rich in gothic images. One is immediately drawn to a small background figure in paramilitary attire who leans against a grubby yellow wall. The sum of dirty greens and brown strokes of paint, his body oozes those all too human traits of boredom, mixed with arrogance and a subtle tinge of exhaustion we might associate with a jailer. Teles has captured Bowling's fluidity of touch and sensuous paint handling that would later become hallmarks of his turn to abstraction. Our gaze moves from the bored indifference of the guard to a terrified grimace, belonging to a head of molten and bruised flesh, floating toward the centre of the painting. Is this a political prisoner, hands roped together, awaiting more punishment? Is another guard's military field cap a nod to the rise of Fidel Castro, revolution in Cuba and the 'Missile Crisis'?

Fast forward to 2021. Ana's painting stands alone in a church where the alter would have stood. The church's neo gothic geometries uncannily mirror the complex geometries of the painting. It's the perfect place to reflect on the allusive imagery that Bowling created in reaction to those tumultuous times.Teles has, through the process of rigorous copying, brought back to us, dark and brooding, a ghost of a painting, itself, full of ghosts.
