There are places that you visit, and there are places that change you. We had the extraordinary privilege of traveling to Klemtu and spending time at @spiritbearbc to sit quietly on the land and witness one of the rarest bears in the world- the Spirit Bear. What makes this place even more extraordinary is that the Kitasoo Xai’xais Nations are not simply inviting people to come see their land, they are stewarding it. The community protects the land and waters they have cared for since time immemorial. They have banned bear hunting in their territory. They are protecting wildlife, monitoring ecosystems, restoring habitat, and creating a model for so many others.

We are living through a time when some of our last pristine places are still being treated as commodities. To witness spirit bears, grizzly bears, black bears, sea wolves, orcas, fin whales, humpbacks, bald eagles, salmon, birds, kelp forests, ancient trees, and all the creatures that make this ecosystem whole was an extraordinary privilege. But the greatest privilege was seeing what happens when a community has the authority to care for its own homeland. There is so much the rest of us can learn from that.

Thank you to Doug Neasloss, Roxanne Robinson, Heather, Cassandra, Krista, Justin, Christa, Cat, Wendy, the Spirit Bear Lodge team, and the entire Kitasoo Xai’xais community for sharing this place, your knowledge, your stories, and your vision with us. And may we understand that when land stays in Indigenous hands, extraordinary things can happen

I met Remy nine years ago, when he was just a puppy in Vivek’s backyard, happily attempting to chew on some rocks. From the very beginning, he was the sweetest guy.

He was the best studio dog I have ever known. He sat patiently through our rehearsals, our long chats over coffee in the kitchen, and all the beautiful chaos that comes with making music. I’m pretty sure we even have a few of his snores captured somewhere on our album recordings. ❤️

Remy was the biggest teddy bear I ever met, and somehow he made every day in the studio better just by being there. His expressive eyebrows could say everything, and his excited bark always let us know what was happening in the backyard or when a new friend had arrived. Watching him interact with Vivek in the studio always melted my heart.

Remy left us last night, far too soon. Sending so much love to Vivek and Patty as they navigate a world without their sweetest boy.

Rest well, sweetest prince. You were so deeply loved, and you will be so deeply missed. The studio will never, ever be the same. 💔

There are few experiences that can capture the immense power, beauty, sacredness, and humbling force of the natural world quite like witnessing the eruption of Kilauea in Hawaiʻi on the full moon. Standing before the flowing lava was a reminder of how small we are, how alive our planet is, and how much there is to honor beyond ourselves. Just for perspective on our distance, the clouds above of heat and ash reached heights of 19,000 feet above sea level!

For many Native Hawaiians, Pele is revered as the deity whose presence is intimately connected with Halemaʻumaʻu at Kīlauea. To witness this place was a profound privilege, and we do so with gratitude and respect for the land, its people, and the cultural traditions that continue to steward its stories and significance.

Mahalo to No’eau, Haley, and everyone at @huimau_ohana for your generosity and the world-changing work that brought us here. And thank you, Victoria, for continuing to illuminate paths forward and create opportunities for connection. ❤️❤️❤️

Few chapters crackle with the intensity of the 1975 meeting between the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Jeff Beck. Recounting this era, Narada Michael Walden captures the visceral atmosphere of recording Visions of the Emerald & Beyond at Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios, an initiation that felt like occupying the same hallowed space as drumming legends like Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Miles. As the band transitioned to the road, touring alongside a red hot Jeff Beck during his Blow by Blow zenith.

Narada deconstructs the Beck enigma as a masterful duality: an Outhouse Bottom of gritty, raw, and unapologetically funky blues juxtaposed against a Penthouse View of ethereal, sweet melodic sensibility. Beyond the technical audacity, Narada evokes the human core of Beck’s playing through the metaphor of High School Spirit a kinetic, romantic urgency that felt as intimate and yearning as a prom night encounter. It was within this crucible of shared stages and mutual reverence that the groundwork was laid for their future partnership, marking a defining epoch where the music remained as unpredictable as it was transcendent.

Across Coast Salish territory in the Pacific Northwest, Children of the Setting Sun Productions is using storytelling to preserve culture, support community, and reconnect people with traditional knowledge.

We had the honor of writing a new piece for Ishkode Fund about their work, from salmon restoration to creating pathways for Indigenous youth in media and storytelling.

For them, storytelling is more than creative expression. It’s a way of carrying knowledge forward - something that carries through in their new film, The River Remembers, which asks us to see rivers not as resources, but as living systems.

For ‘90s kids who were the taught the sugar coated version of Thanksgiving where the Pilgrims were friendly settlers sharing a peaceful feast with Indigenous folks, this ICONIC scene from Addams Family Values was the first moment that shattered that nostalgic myth and opened our eyes to the true, darker history behind the holiday.

A good reminder of why stories matter.

India’s beloved “Mother of Trees,” Saalumarada Thimmakka, has passed away at 114. An embodiment of Mother Nature herself, she was a Silviculturist and environmentalist from Karnataka. She is celebrated for having planted and cared for over 8,000 trees over the past 80 years including 400 Banyan Trees.

Born in Gubbi Taluk and deprived of formal education, Thimmakka began working as a laborer at a young age. Married to Sri Bikkala Chikkayya at just 12, she earned the title ‘Saalumara’ (meaning ‘row of trees’) due to her unwavering dedication to tree planting. The couple’s journey started with ficus (banyan) trees, which were abundant in their village. They began by planting 10 trees in the first year, gradually increasing their efforts, and building an impressive green legacy.

Despite the dry and challenging conditions, they worked tirelessly—Chikkaiah dug the pits, while Thimmakka, affectionately known as ‘Vruksha Maathe’ (Mother of Trees), carried water for the young saplings. Using their hard-earned money for supplies, they protected the trees with thorny shrubs as fencing. Together, they lovingly nurtured 400 trees, treating each one as their own child.

After Chikkaiah’s passing in 1991, Thimmakka found renewed strength and purpose in the trees they had planted together. Continuing their legacy, she went on to nurture over 8,000 trees throughout her lifetime.

In 2016, the BBC named her as one of the 100 most influential and inspirational women of the year. The list of accolades for the ‘Mother of Trees’ is longer. She won National Citizen’s award, the Veerachakra Prashasthi Award, and The Padma Shri, among many others.

In 2019, Thimmakka successfully opposed a highway expansion project that threatened her trees, compelling authorities to find an alternative route, thereby saving the 70-year-old trees she had planted with her husband.

She is a reminder to all of us of how one person can change the world.
