Lauryn Hill A Portrait Through My Lens.
.
Before I photographed Lauryn Hill, I knew her voice from the Fugees’ “Killing Me Softly with His Song” and “Ready or Not”, and from her solo songs “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, “Ex-Factor” and “Everything Is Everything”.
.
But what I remember most from photographing her is how lovely she was. I always enjoy meeting and talking with new people. The camera gives me opportunities to do that, and this was a meeting I felt especially grateful for.
.
I chose a close portrait against a dark background. The light caught the beads in her hair and the blue around her eyes. Then she smiled, and her eyes seemed to smile with her. I love how her whole expression opens up in that moment. Her warmth came through so clearly that I knew it was the photograph I wanted to keep.
.
When I look at this portrait, I see an extraordinary artist. I also see that smile and remember the pleasure of meeting the person in front of my camera..

Jørgen Leth A Portrait Through My Lens.
.
I photographed Jørgen Leth many times over the years, and I always looked forward to seeing him again. I knew his films, his spoken word music and, above all, his voice. I loved hearing him commentate on cycling for TV 2 in Denmark. His unmistakable voice came out of the television and made the Tour de France feel close to me. Years later, standing with him in front of my camera, I could hear that same voice in the room.
.
Jørgen had a gift for making people look more closely. His fascination with cycling gave us A Sunday in Hell, and he brought that attentive eye to Michael Laudrup: A Football Player. His films earned him awards and honours, while his spoken word music gave his voice another way to reach people.
.
For this portrait, I chose colour because I wanted to keep the warmth and texture of his skin, the pale blue of his eyes and the silver in his hair. I wanted the wrinkles to remain visible. To me, they show a man who had lived, observed and created throughout a long life.
.
His hand rests beside his face, with the ring bearing his initials, JL, clearly visible. I love that small, personal detail. His expression holds my attention even longer. He looks straight into the lens with a steady, searching gaze. There is a seriousness in his face, but also a sense of curiosity, as though he is studying me while I photograph him. Against the dark background, every detail of that expression comes forward.
.
I had photographed Jørgen many times, but I never stopped being curious about him. When I look at this image, I remember our meetings, the sound of his voice and how fortunate I was to spend that time with him. I truly love this portrait of a Danish legend.
