ENCOUNTERS - OPEN STUDIO

Peter D. Abayomi & Lương Huệ Trinh
@iam_peterbata | @luong_hue_trinh

Sound • Ritual • Performance

What happens when artists meet through listening?

Come through for ENCOUNTERS, an open studio session exploring what can emerge when artists meet through sound, movement, ritual, improvisation, and shared presence.

Born from a recent encounter in Nigeria between Lagos-based multidisciplinary artist and composer Peter D. Abayomi, and Vietnamese multimedia composer, sound artist, and electro-acoustic improviser Lương Huệ Trinh, marking her first performance in Nigeria.

Instead of finished works, we’re opening up our process — the questions, experiments, gestures, sounds, and exchanges shaping how the work is made.

ENCOUNTERS invites you into a space of making and listening — what happens when we truly listen to one another, when artistic traditions from different regions meet in the vastness of the universe?

Three years later, this piece is still growing.

Written in February 2023, performed across different stages, now featured with the EJ Ensemble @eranjijeproject at the German Consulate Lagos reception dinner in honour of the German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs. 🇩🇪 🇳🇬

It’s already on AudioMack, and I’m currently working on an extended version like this one. The journey continues. 🎺🤍

That’s a wrap! 🌊🎬

From all of us at WOW FactorZ, thank you to everyone who made this edition of Cinema by the Sea possible.

To the filmmakers who entrusted us with their stories. To the artists and performers who brought the waterfront to life. To our partners, collaborators, volunteers, and every single person who showed up with curiosity, openness, and love, thank you.

This weekend reminded us that cinema is more than watching films. It’s about gathering, listening, sharing experiences, and building community across cultures.

A special thank you to Cinema by the Sea, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Awujọlá, our artists, filmmakers from Nigeria and the Netherlands, and everyone who contributed their time, energy, and support to make this cultural exchange possible.

We’ll carry these conversations with us until we meet again.

With gratitude,
Wow FactorZ 💙

The past week, we had the pleasure of hosting Ni Ilaje - an audio visual presentation expanding on our work at the ilaje waterfront community. With reactive visuals and field recordings, we created an experience that reflects life here shaped by water, waste, and the rhythm of everyday life. Thank you to our collaborator @skodo Lee. Thank you to our host @eranjije and the broader isale akoka community for accommodating us.

POS (Point of Sail) is a body of work developed in the Ilaje, Isale Akoka waterfront community in Lagos.

It responds to waste systems, migration through water, neglect, and flooding as they shape everyday life along the waterfront. The work is developed through time spent in the community, moving through observation, conversations, sound recordings, and the materials found within the environment.

These images trace moments, conditions, and encounters that shaped the process of the work.

Join us this Friday at the waterfront community for a visual presentation and sound performance that take elements from our research here.

Address: Down Ajayi Olaiya Street off Obadiah, Pako, Akoka Lagos.
Date: 19th, June.
Time: 5-10pm

This project was sponsored by @goetheinstitut_nigeria and @fordfoundation through the Claiming the future project. Supported by @eranjijeproject

We are glad to present POS (Point of Sail), a body of work from the Ilaje, Isale Akoka waterfront focused on environmental consciousness and awareness. It extends our search into
life around the lagoon and how water shapes movement, work, and everyday living through sound, performance, and installation.

We present NI ILAJE, a sound performance, installation, and projection experience developed from POS under the @goetheinstitut_nigeria Claiming the Future program, hosted and supported by @eranjijeproject
The work grew out of time spent in the community listening, recording, and talking with people, moving slowly through moments and observations.

At the centre is a boat installation we built as part of the project, placed at the waterfront. It sits by the lagoon within the community, which is inspired by fishing, transport, and everyday activity on the water.

Sound performance by NNF, featuring @skodo_lee interactive visual projections.

Date: 19th June,2026
Time: 5:00pm - 10:00pm

We invite you to experience the presentation and the community.

⚠️ Please note: The Circular Heroes workshop has unfortunately been cancelled due to visa issues.

As part of THE LAND REMEMBERS exhibition, Peter D. Abayomi @iam_peterbata will host the Circular Heroes workshop on the last day of the exhibition 2 June at GlogauAir Berlin @glogauair. Participants are asked to bring their own discarded materials and will receive instructions on methods such as embroidery, applique, and weaving, and experimentally apply them to pre-made printed textiles aiming to visualise waste objects as “activated objects” and portraying local Nigerian teenagers from the Isale Akoka area in Bariga as key players in the circular economy.

The first iterations of the Circular Heroes workshop were hosted by Rafael Kouto @rafaelkouto in collaboration with Peter D. Abayomi @iam_peterbata at Eran Jije Studio @eranjijeproject in Bariga, at G.A.S. Foundation @gasfoundation in Lagos, Nigeria, and Maison Shift @maisonshift in Zürich, Switzerland.

Save the date! 💌

We are excited to announce that our group exhibition THE LAND REMEMBERS will be on view from 27 May - 2 June at GlogauAir Berlin @glogauair, and will examine the ongoing realities of Waste Colonialism. The term describes the export of waste from the Global North to the Global South, where the material consequences of overconsumption are displaced rather than resolved. What is framed as recycling, donation or circularity operates as a system that sustains imbalance. Consumption remains concentrated in one place, while its environmental and social costs are lived in another. In sustainability discourse, the language of exchange often suggests reciprocity. In practice, the conditions are uneven. Materials accumulate elsewhere, entering land, water and infrastructures already under strain.

The exhibition traces how waste moves, settles and persists. The works consider land and bodies as sites that register these movements over time. Memory here is not symbolic. It is material. Rather than approaching waste as an endpoint, the exhibition positions it as evidence of systems that continue to shape the present.

THE LAND REMEMBERS brings together works by artists working across video, installation and performance. Participating artists: Austin Nortey @nakus_brand & Chie Marquart-Tabel @chiemarquarttabel, David Donkor @morrelyf_, Jamal Nxedlana @jamalaun, Jere Ikongio @afrikanherbalist, Marc Khafre @marckhafre, Mayila Khodadin @mayila_khodadin, Mona Okulla Obua @mona.okulla.obua, Peter D.
