We get the live music culture we deserve. Go see your local bands.

Some selected shots from the last two months of gigs. Having been away for a while, busy with recording and life, I’m struck by the abundance of talent, fragility of the infrastructure, resilience of independent venue operators, kindness of the people, and enduring creativity of the local live scene. As @swallow_the_rat say, it’s an ecosystem and we all have to show up for it.

My next gigs:
• [Attending] @screambytulips, 17 Oct at @bigfan_nz (@beatdownevents); @dougfest_nz 4, 23-24 October at @whammybarauckland; @ovochannel @e_itsign, 30 Oct at @themothershipnz (@your_enabler_presents)
• [Playing] @sunwraithband with @head_lock_grave @lacqueredblack_ @melonheartnz, 31 Oct at @bigfan_nz (@rightturnnz)
• [Promoting, playing] @rothkorecordsnz presents Tāmaki Makaurau ALTFEST, 5 December at @bigfan_nz

💬 Comment with the other local gigs we should know about.

Artist-run independent label Rothko Records presents the inaugural Tāmaki Makaurau ALTFEST, an 11-band gathering taking place at Morningside’s Big Fan on Saturday, 5 December. Co-curated alongside local scene legend Angelo Munro (Bleeders, Erase Everything), the all-ages and licensed event bridges Auckland’s emergent young alternative circuit with stalwarts of Aotearoa’s heavy and post-punk underground.

ALTFEST celebrates tenured artists and provides a platform for the next generation with a near-even split between senior and youth acts alongside touring guests from Wellington and Tauranga. Running continuously across eight hours, the festival showcases a spectrum of alternative adjacent genres: from shoegaze and post-punk, to sludge and prog.

Framing the bill’s two creative generations are co-headliners Swallow the Rat and Back to the Hillside. Seasoned post-punk outfit Swallow the Rat bring their dense, propulsive blend of prickly rhythm and psychedelic fuzz, honed across extensive US and European tours and supports for the likes of Sebadoh, Gang of Four, and Quicksand. Self-produced grungegaze torchbearers, Back to the Hillside, showcase their crushing wall of distortion and lush vocals as vanguards of the city’s underground youth circuit.

The veteran contingent of musicians features hardcore-infused alt-rock group Erase Everything (members of Bleeders, Shitripper, and Fever Lake), cinematic post-metal trio Sunwraith (ex-Decortica), monolithic doom act Demons of Noon, chorus-soaked heavy-hitters Nailfile, and visiting Tauranga hardcore agitators Threat.Meet.Protocol.

Representing the next wave alongside Back to the Hillside are fast-rising post-metal trio Exit Sign, Pōneke shoegaze/Midwest-emo outfit King Hit, and vital alt up-and-comers Chlorine and Somniium.

Supports are locked in for Deafheaven + Nothing's return to NZ this July, in Wellington and Auckland!

In Wellington, they're joined by Libbianski, a local three-piece dragging shoegaze through doom and post-metal, all wall-of-sound guitar and quiet-loud dynamics. In Auckland, Erase Everything step up: a five-piece of Tāmaki Makaurau and Ōtepoti scene vets (ex-Pluto, Bleeders, Shitripper) running howled vocals through overdriven, atmospheric riffage.

THURSDAY 02 JULY: SAN FRAN, WELLINGTON (Tix running low, 40 left)
FRIDAY 03 JULY: POWERSTATION, AUCKLAND

Tickets via banished 🪐

Read my Gig Review for @muzicnz :
https://www.muzic.nz/reviews/gig-review-swallow-the-rat-friends-whammy-auckland-27-03-2026/ (link in bio)

‘By the third track, Glass Souls, the band had settled into a groove. Another catchy, head-banging singalong tune which could easily cross into radio-hit territory. Matthew Berry on guitar delivered a solid performance, while new addition Amber Beaton settled in confidently on bass and backing vocals, and John Ropiha on drums held everything together with clean, consistent timekeeping that drove the rhythm’

@whammybarauckland 27/3/26 Gig Review for @muzicnz

‘Friday night’s lineup showcased some of New Zealand’s top-tier talent; I was invited along to an old haunt, Whammy Bar on K’ Road, to check out Erase Everything and was treated to a wall of sound, energy, and impressive musicianship by three post-punk, hardcore-tinged, noise rock bands, each bringing something distinct but equally engaging.’
