🎭🔥 #ShowcaseSaturday 🔥🎭
This week, we're shining a spotlight on the latest collaboration from Ren and Chris Webby - "Smoking Gun".
If you've not seen the video yet, prepare yourself. The creative team has delivered a brilliantly chaotic animated adventure packed with dark humour, absurd characters, satire and enough visual details to keep you hitting replay. The animation was created by Jeremy Schell with additional work from EraserDread, helping bring this fictional story to life in a way that feels like a Saturday morning cartoon that escaped into the adult world.
As with all satire, not everybody is laughing.
Some viewers have taken issue with the exaggerated comedy and fictional storytelling, but that's kind of the point. Great art doesn't always sit comfortably. Sometimes, it pokes fun at society, sometimes it exaggerates reality, and sometimes it deliberately pushes the envelope to make us think, laugh, or even feel slightly uncomfortable.
Music history is full of examples.
Back in the late 80s, Michael Jackson was doing exactly the same thing with Speed Demon and Leave Me Alone. Those videos used surreal humour, cartoon-style visuals, and satire to comment on fame, media obsession and public perception. Leave Me Alone famously mocked tabloid rumours about Michael's life, including headlines such as:
📰 "Michael's Space-Age Diet" 📰 "Michael Proposes to Liz"
It even featured visual jokes about media obsession with his appearance and personal life.
At the time, many critics and commentators didn't know what to make of these bizarre videos. Some thought they were strange, self-indulgent, or too weird for mainstream audiences. Yet today they're widely regarded as creative classics that showcased Jackson's willingness to take risks and challenge expectations.
That's what art does.
Art tells stories. Art creates conversations. Art challenges norms. Art occasionally offends. Art pushes boundaries.
And sometimes the things people complain about today become the very things they're celebrating ten years later.
Whether you love it, hate it, "Smoking Gun" is another reminder that Ren and Webby aren't interested in playing it safe. 🫡🔥 Deb 💗
