Among the many Neanderthal sites known worldwide, Shanidar Cave stands out as one of the most extraordinary places for exploring Neanderthal behaviour.

Known since the mid-20th century, this cave in Iraqi Kurdistan has yielded an exceptional concentration of Neanderthal remains. Particularly remarkable is an area where several individuals were buried in the same place, not simultaneously, but at different moments in time. These burials were located beside a large upright rock, a prominent feature of the cave that may have held special significance for these Neanderthal groups. Generation after generation, they returned to this same place to bury their dead.

Shanidar is therefore a key site for understanding Neanderthal funerary behaviour. But recent excavations are revealing much more than what happened after death. They are also offering new insights into what may have happened just before death.
And once again, trauma plays a central role in the story.

A remarkable penetrating injury in the scapula of Shanidar A provides evidence of an encounter with a wooden weapon, raising fascinating questions about the circumstances surrounding this individual’s death. Was this an act of interpersonal violence? Or could it have been the result of a hunting accident?

We may never know exactly what happened. But what makes this story particularly compelling is that Shanidar A, despite this evidence of a potentially violent episode, was also buried in a place where other members of the group had been laid to rest.
Having had the opportunity to study these remains and contribute to our understanding of such extraordinary fossils, alongside an equally extraordinary team of researchers, has been a true privilege.

Here’s to many more years of research, discoveries, and collaboration with our colleagues at the University of Cambridge!

Exactly a week ago REDMIX wrapped its trip to Tunis.
We wanted to take this opportunity to thank all our partners and panelists who made another edition of the Atelier DE LA MER ROUGE
À LA MER BLANCHE possible.
We had the pleasure of sharing our lines of research with scholars and students of the “two seas” while adding an important new angle to our endeavors.

Besides the interesting insights from other shores we all shared, we also watched and commented two documentaries: “Siciliani d’Africa. Tunisia Terra Promessa” by bivonamarcello and @campisialfonso & “In My Mother’s House” by Lina Fruzzetti. And @adnenelghali and @fdragonevideo presented “Gedda Sposa del Mar Rosso e Crogiolo di Diversità”@bidiotunis

We are grateful for the group which sparked from these seeds and the many collaborations we laid the ground for in a few days.

With this long list that follows we want to acknowledge the tremendous collective effort which made for a very successful II edition of this Atelier.
See you next year Tunis!

Let’s sail to other shores now!

Amud 7
𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘰 𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴
Middle Palaeolithic
Levant

This Neanderthal infant, buried around 60.000 years ago in Amud Cave, was found with its bones in anatomical connection, an exceptional state of preservation for such fragile remains. On its tiny pelvis appeared something even more striking: the maxilla of a red deer.

But this little skeleton has revealed even more. Stay tuned for more next week!
