👁️🥢 Female rage is best served RAW. 🩸

Cannibalism. Misogyny. Revenge. And a disturbing obsession with blue eyeballs. 👀

My latest #FiveStarDoodle is inspired by The Eyes Are the Best Part by Monika Kim, another deliciously unhinged @aardvarkbookclub pick! One of my favorite reads of 2024! 🖤

When Ji-won's father abandons her family, her world begins to unravel. Between her mother's new (and absolutely insufferable) boyfriend and the constant objectification of Asian women, Ji-won's simmering rage takes a rather... appetizing turn. 👁️

And by appetizing, I mean CANNIBALISM. 🩸

But this book is SO much more than its gruesome premise. It's a sharp, darkly funny exploration of female rage, racism, misogyny, and the fetishization of Asian women. The body horror is horrifying, but the social commentary has some serious teeth.

For this doodle, I leaned into the intersection of food and horror with:

👁️ Eyeballs served on chopsticks
🥢 Korean-inspired dishes
🥒 Scattered cucumber slices
🩸 A generous helping of blood

I had so much fun bringing this creepy little feast to life, especially experimenting with colored pencils, bold outlines, and all those tiny details!

Apparently, my artistic niche is making deeply disturbing books look kind of cute. 😂

Tell me: What's your favorite book about female rage? 👀

I have no words! This was incredible. The depth of the world building was so intense, so vivid and so full of detail. The plot was woven by such elite prose and language that I was gripped from the start. It is very danmei xianxia coded and given the author’s love of that genre, I can see how it massively influenced his story telling. This story may not be for everyone and in a modern world where expediency is favoured over absorbing the depth of the narrative, I implore people to read this and take their time in understanding the story. This was a novel about political machinations, disparity and unfairness. It questions whether we should permit those who come from an elitist power house, the ability to doll out justice and decide on the measure of fairness. I loved the ideal of the balance of power - the weights and the scales have long been a symbol of justice but with this story, the reader is asked to question how it looks differently in the eyes of others.

A softer fantasy set in an alternate Byzantine Empire, this beautiful story is for the history lovers who love a bit of adventure on the side.

The Jewel of Corlivo by @kathleencarrfoster
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a historical fiction novel (with a romance subplot!) and I really enjoyed this one. I did like that the author was able to tell a story like this without going into graphic detail, since we all know what it has been and is like to be a woman. Our FMC, Anna, has been raised since literal birth to be a courtesan. This story is about her reclaiming her bodily autonomy & life. Even though the content is heavy for obvious reasons, it has adventure, history, and romance. I read it within a day! Because of the subject matter, I wouldn’t consider it to be YA but if you prefer your romances more closed-door and more of a subplot I definitely recommend!
