UNDERGROUND U.S.A. (1980) - Directed by Eric Mitchell 🇺🇸

Eric Mitchell’s New Cinema No Wave classic/masterpiece. Starring downtown cult icons such as Patti Astor, Rene Ricard, Cookie Mueller & many, many more. I was reminded of my copy of the film during a recent watch of Brian Vincent’s NY arts scene/Edward Brezinski documentary, MAKE ME FAMOUS (2021); UNDERGROUND U.S.A. rightfully still getting high praise. I believe Eric’s films are still in the process of being restored by MoMA, so enjoy this rare archival media/ephemera in the meantime.

1–4: Scans from the super rare 1982 Japanese Betamax release. NFS.
5–6: Snapshots from the film.
7: Cast outside of the legendary Mudd Club, NYC.
8–10: Scans of on-set photos by David Armstrong, from an archival Bomb Magazine article.

Eric Mitchell & Rosemary Hochschild in a publicity photo for X-TERMINATOR (1977) dir. Michael Oblowitz

X-TERMINATOR was one of the first 16mm b/w New York No Wave films. It was completed shortly after Amos Poe's pioneering first solo effort, UNMADE BEDS (1976), which director Michael Oblowitz helped make possible by sneaking cameras out of Columbia University where he was studying.

Eric Mitchell stars as a neo-noir-punk parody of Lemmy Caution in ALPHAVILLE, while Rosemary Hochschild stars as a post-semiotic parody of Patty Hearst.

X-TERMINATOR gets a very rare screening at Torrance Art Museum in LA on September 5th. Check it out.

RIP Rosemary Hochschild 🖤

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GODLIS 🐐

The legendary photographer turns 75 today! When you think of NY Punk photography, chances are you think of GODLIS. Below is a quote on how he began shooting at the famed CBGBs, and 20 iconic photos shot by the man himself. Happy birthday, David. 🎂

“I was at the bar late at night. I came to New York to photograph by day, on the streets; I didn’t really come to New York to be a rock and roll photographer, but I ended up in this very interesting place. I had been looking at a book by the French photographer, Brassaï, and I was very taken with his night photographs. So I was sitting at CBGB’s thinking maybe I can do like Brassaï, and photograph at night here, without flash, just by natural light. People would leave the club to smoke a cigarette or to go get some fresh air. In between sets, people would hang out on the street, and I thought the street lights kind of light them up, so I can figure out how to take pictures using that light. It all sort of came to me one night.”

RIP WILLIAM COUPON

When you think of backdrop portraits, you think of William Coupon. Prior to his success photographing presidents for Time Magazine, as well as other notable celebrities, Coupon’s first photo series was ‘The Punks of New York’. Almost all of the portraits were shot at the famed Mudd Club. They are some of my favorite images of all time, and oddly obscure. I’m a few days late on posting about William’s passing, but hope these incredible portraits (and some bonus contact sheets) I’ve collected in that time make up for it. Rest in peace William Coupon.

A glimpse inside the winter 1980 issue of NY Art magazine, Cover. I came into a few issues of this lesser known piece of NY art/music history and will be sharing more in follow up posts.

A few tidbits on No Wave and related including a nice little piece penned by Rhys Chatham. Also a discussion with Steve Reich & Phillip Glass. Gerry Hovagimyan, who was the drummer in The Communists, was a contributor for this magazine. This issue features an in-depth piece on rigging/sculpture. I just love the gallery ads too. The Artists Space one is great.

Last page reveals a mystery regarding missing art....wonder how that story ended...

RIP Glenn Branca, George Scott III, Gordon Stevenson, Mirielle Cervenka & John Cage

AMOS POE: UNMADE 2026
40min documentary film.

Film measures time; time measures life.

Amos Poe: Unmade follows the legendary underground filmmaker through three years of terminal illness, not as a farewell portrait, but as a final, uncompromising work of his own cinema.

Amos Poe, Patti Astor & Eric Mitchell at the Deauville Film Festival, 1977

I love, love, love this photo of three incredibly talented & important downtown artists attending their first ever film festival, Deauville. They were invited to premiere Amos’s first solo, feature film: UNMADE BEDS. The funny thing here is Eric’s hair still being blonde from the shooting of Amos’s NEXT film: THE FOREIGNER.

A young Eric Mitchell & Amos Poe on set of UNMADE BEDS (1976)

Amos sports a shirt with ‘POE’ printed on it, alike Duncan Hannah’s character wearing a shirt with ‘RICO’ printed on it in the film.

Unmade Beds was the first (or second, if you count ‘The Blank Generation’, also made by Amos) No Wave film. A fun fact about the truly independent nature of creating the film: when it came to the scene with Eric & Debbie Harry; Amos had all the characters, his script; but no camera. A student at Columbia at the time, and fellow No Wave pioneer, Michael Oblowitz, would sneak a camera out of the university, and thus Amos was able to complete the film.

Amos sadly passed away on Christmas Day 2025, as only he could, following a lengthy battle with cancer. But his mark on cinema remains - as does how many people he and his work inspired. RIP, Amos 🖤
