oh, claudio.

i will never be able to form a one-sided opinion on you.

you are too frustrating for that. too contradictory. too proud and too insecure, too loving and too capable of being cruel, too young and too convinced that you understand the world when you very clearly do not. you are infuriating and yet, so painfully easy to understand.

you make terrible choices. you hurt people. you let fear, pride and other people’s opinions get louder than your own heart.
and somehow, i still found so much tenderness in you.

there were so many moments where i wanted to grab you by the shoulders and ask what the hell you thought you were doing and just as many where some part of me wanted to defend you, because underneath all the arrogance and honour and terrible decision-making there was always this terrified young man trying desperately to be enough.
except the more i understood you, the clearer it became that there was really no defence.

i understood the fear. i understood the humiliation. i understood the anger, the hurt, the absolute terror of believing that the person you loved had betrayed you and that everyone around you had watched you become a fool.
but none of that gave you the right to be cruel.

there were approximately 6,547,839 other ways you could have handled it. you could have confronted hero privately. you could have walked away. you could have taken five minutes to consider whether publicly destroying the person you supposedly loved was perhaps not the healthiest first response.

that contradiction became one of my favourite things to explore: being able to completely understand where a feeling comes from while still looking at what someone does with that feeling and not being able to stand behind that choice. fear can explain cruelty without justifying it. pain can explain anger without making the damage it causes any less real.

Make way for Messina’s most eligible bachelor! ✨👑

Every Shakespearean rom-com needs a Disney prince. Unfortunately, we have this one.

Charming. Mysterious. Well-connected.
And absolutely committed to making everyone else’s life significantly worse.

Ladies and gentlemen… Don John. 💣

See his completely normal and reasonable contribution to the plot of Much Ado About Nothing for the last time on 30 August in the Audimin. 🎭🍋

The villain and the man tasked with catching villains are, unfortunately, the same man. And that’s the duality of our beloved and talented Eric. ✨

By night, he’s plotting the downfall of Messina as Don John.
By slightly later that same night, he’s attempting to uphold the law as Dogberry.

See him somehow bring both ends of Messina’s moral spectrum to life one last time at our FINAL PERFORMANCE tonight, 30 August. 🎭

One last chance to witness the villain, the constable, and the deeply concerning fact that they share a face.

Unfortunately, Don Pedro has had a front-row seat to every single one of these problems and diagnosis is... concerning 😭

From questionable decision-making and deeply rooted issues to emotional instability, delusion and just... whatever Borachio has going on... Messina is doing GREAT, actually.

WHAT. A. WEEKEND. 🎭🍋✨

Our first two performances of Much Ado About Nothing are officially behind us, and we are still trying to process just how incredible they were.

Friday’s premiere began with one final plot twist before we had even stepped on stage: because of the weather, we had to move the entire performance indoors at the last minute.

And then… you showed up.

So many of you showed up that we very quickly realised the chairs we had prepared were nowhere near enough. Cue members of the cast and crew running through the university in full costume, raiding seminar rooms for extra chairs and dragging benches in from the hallways to create every possible additional seat we could find.

And somehow, people still had to stand.

Then on Saturday, Messina finally got to return to the Soziales Feld, exactly where we had imagined it all summer: under the open sky, surrounded by greenery, with another audience far bigger than we had expected. ☀️

Two completely different settings — and somehow the same incredible energy both nights.

You laughed with us, reacted to every ridiculous decision, gasped, cheered and yes, you cried. 🥹 There were moments when the entire audience went completely silent, moments when we could hear reactions rippling through the crowd, and one particular moment near the end that caused such an explosion of cheering, clapping and screaming that we had to hold our positions considerably longer than planned. 😭👏

There are few things more surreal than being frozen in character while an entire audience collectively loses its mind.

And after both performances, so many of you stayed. You talked to the cast, asked questions, told us your favourite moments and characters, shared your interpretations and gave us some of the loveliest feedback we could have imagined.

We spent months rehearsing these scenes among ourselves, wondering what would land, what would make people laugh and what would make the room go quiet. Getting to finally share it with an audience (and getting THIS audience in return!!) was more than we could have hoped for.

Meet the cast of EDG+’s adaptation of
🍋📜William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing 📜🍋

Over the past few weeks, we’ve introduced you to the people responsible for our costumes, props, scenery, tech and PR — while very carefully avoiding one small detail:

who on earth any of us are actually playing. 👀

You’ve met all the people behind the production. Now, it’s time to meet Messina. 🎭🇮🇹

We have lovers and professional love-haters. Soldiers and schemers. Nobility, servants, law enforcement of… varying competence, one very busy Friar, and enough people making questionable decisions to keep Messina occupied for an entire evening.

And because our entire production consists of only 14 people, you recognise all of these faces from our backstage-team posts. Around here, designing posters, sewing costumes, running tech or building props apparently does not exempt you from putting on a moustache and walking onto a stage five minutes later. 😌

Some of us even decided that one character simply wasn’t enough.

So swipe through to finally find out who has been behind all those names we’ve been throwing around since our original announcement. From Beatrice and Benedick’s ongoing war of words to Hero and Claudio’s whirlwind romance, Don John’s scheming and Dogberry’s… best efforts. 💌⚔️🍷

The teams have been introduced.
The costumes are on.
The moustaches have been drawn.

Meet the residents of Messina. 🍋

And if you missed our first performances, you still have another chance to see them all in action:

Meet our Props & Scenery Team 🎨🧳🌿

From crafting props from scratch to sketching, painting and building our scenery, these four are responsible for turning the Soziales Feld into our very own Messina — and making sure our actors don’t end up empty-handed (quite literally) ✨

Whether it’s a tiny object that appears on stage for five seconds or an entire piece of scenery setting the atmosphere of a scene, Jenny, Alex, Fiona and Eric have been working behind the scenes to bring the world of Much Ado About Nothing to life 🍋📜🌹

And because EDG+ is a rather small production with only 14 people in total, “behind the scenes” is a somewhat flexible term around here… 👀
You’ll actually get to see every single person featured in these team posts on stage this Friday as well… although we’re keeping who exactly they’re playing under wraps for just a little longer. 🎭

For now, we’ll only say this: someone has some very strong opinions about love, someone is going to have an absolutely catastrophic time at a wedding, someone else is suspiciously committed to pretending romance is beneath them, and one person somehow manages to be both part of the problem and part of law enforcement.

Multitasking? Never heard of her. We simply do everything.

Show our Props & Scenery crew some love ✨

You may know the EDG, but what exactly is EDG+? 🤔

EDG+ gives members of the English Drama Group the opportunity to realise their own theatre projects outside of the regular semester production.

Past projects have included Streaming Theatre, as well as the first EDG+ play production, Satyricon, directed by our beloved Eric, who now runs the EDG and also directed Poe Party!

And now, EDG+ is back with another play production: William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. 🇮🇹☀️

Over the next weeks, we’ll be sharing glimpses into our process: from rehearsals and line learning to costumes, props, scenery, and all the backstage work that brings Messina to life.

Welcome to EDG+.
There is much ado ahead. 🎭

Lights, Camera, Action!!📸

Last weekend, we had our tech rehearsal, which means that it is time for the long-deserved Tech shoutout!🔦

After weeks of preparing lights and sounds during rehearsal, it‘s finally their turn to shine and to help bring life to the stage! Managing funky and dramatic lights, sound cues and projections all fall under their domain and really round out the play~🔔🔊
