Who remembers the extended remix of “Microphone Fiend”? Eric B. & Rakim with DJ Mark The 45 King on the remix is straight late-’80s hip-hop heat. RIP Mark Howard James (Oct. 1961 - Oct. 2923)

Aerial footage of the South Bronx filmed by Thames TV in 1980, selected and adapted to vertical format, with “Follow the Leader” by Eric B. & Rakim replacing the original audio. An earlier image of the Bronx reconnected with a sound that would come to define another moment in its musical history

June 1988 - Follow the Leader (1988) was the second studio album by Eric B. & Rakim, the influential hip-hop duo from Queens, New York. Their debut, Paid in Full (1987), had already revolutionized rap with its minimalist production and intricate lyricism.

On Follow the Leader, Eric B. maintained a tightly controlled, deliberate approach to the beats and favored clean, layered samples and precise scratching over chaotic soundscapes. Rakim mirrored that disciplined approach in his delivery: his calm, complex flow and internal rhyme schemes displayed a technical mastery that set a new benchmark for lyrical sophistication. His influence would ripple through generations of MCs, shaping artists such as Nas, Jay-Z, and others.

Follow the Leader became their best-selling album and was the peak of their commercial success. Their first two albums together established Eric B. & Rakim as one of the most important duos in hip-hop history, laying the groundwork for the genre’s evolution into the 1990s.
