What moment changed the direction of your life?

For Eric J. Thomas, LMSW, it was a season of unemployment, depression, exhaustion, and feeling like no matter how hard he tried, the breakthrough wasn’t coming.

But that season taught him something powerful:

You have to be in the driver’s seat of your own life.

Sometimes the season that feels like you’re stuck is actually the season that changes your direction.

What happens when you stop living for everyone else’s approval?

Eric J. Thomas, LMSW, explains why your greatest chapter may begin when you stop chasing applause, start living authentically, and find the people who accept you for who you really are.

Sometimes letting go of other people’s opinions doesn’t cost you your community — it helps you find the right one.

What an incredible first day at the APA 2026 Conference! And my first time presenting!

Dr. Smith, Dr. Shaw, and Eric had the opportunity to present our symposium, “REAL TALK, REAL HEALING: Reimagining Black Masculinity & Mental Health Care.”

The session was engaging, interactive, thought-provoking, and filled with meaningful dialogue. We each shared our research exploring Black masculinity and mental health, while Eric brought invaluable clinical expertise that connected our work and highlighted its real-world implications for practice.

Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to these important conversations and to be in community with so many professionals committed to advancing mental health equity.

Looking forward to what the rest of the conference has in store!
