I asked both Mayor Karen Bass and council woman Nithya Raman to come sit with me in my home in Boyle Heights for a one-on-one interview about thier Mayoral candidacy.

And Nithya said yes!

There was a reason I wanted to have it here. Some of the biggest conversations happening in L.A. haven't felt just like “talking points” to us. My family and I have lived them.

*The Lineage fire happened less than a mile from our home.

*ICE has impacted people we love.

*Policing/Police brutality is personal in our family.

So I wanted to ask questions from that place. Not to convince you of anything. Not to do some sort of "click-bait" interview. But also not to avoid the uncomfortable questions.

This first part the interview is our discussion about the Lineage fire.

We were here. We breathed the air. I, like many, many people in my community, got sick and we were left without answers.

So I asked Nithya: If you had been mayor that day, what would you have wanted my family and our neighbors to experience differently?
