Projects like this only exist because of the generosity, labor, intelligence, and care of many people.

As American Chimera (@american_chimera) opened to the public this past weekend, I found myself thinking less about the exhibition itself than about the many people who carried it to this moment.

Eight years is a long time to spend with a project. Along the way, American Chimera was sustained by an extraordinary community of collaborators, interlocutors, critics, advisors, technicians, friends, and family members. Some entered the story briefly. Others remained for years. Each left a mark.

No list could ever be complete, but a few people deserve special mention.

To Jim Day, whose openness, trust, and improbable practice first set this project in motion.

To Richard Torchia, whose intellectual companionship as a thinker, listener, and interlocutor helped shape the project during its formative years.

To Michelle Levy (@lovymish), Kerin Sulock (@kerinsulock), and Sally Szwed (@sally.szwed) for helping shepherd the project through its final stages with wisdom, patience, and remarkable care.

To Studio Lin (@studiolin), Eric Sluyter, T. Griffin (@shinylittle), Philippe Ciompi, Joseph Mastantuono (@eljojogato), Eric Price (@ericprice), and Greenhouse Media (@greenhouse_media) for helping shape how the work looks, sounds, feels, and ultimately meets its audience.

To our wonderful interns, Jackie Errera (@errera.jpg) and Ida Chen (@ballooogabear), who stepped forward to help steward the exhibition and its public life over the summer.

To Constance Mensh (@cocobanal) for documenting the work, and to the many friends, colleagues, advisors, collaborators, family members, and supporters who offered encouragement, criticism, expertise, hospitality, introductions, transportation, spare bedrooms, difficult questions, reality checks, and countless other forms of support along the way.

Art and architecture studio, AD—WO based in New York City, and by extension, between Melbourne and Addis Ababa, gave us the opportunity to extend their design intention to a flexible digital space that captures the openness and collaborative spirit of their practice.

Inspired by Africa's largest open air market, Addis Mercato (Ethiopia), and the grit and grind of open markets in general, aligned with the goals of the AD-WO partners, this site is raw and purposely unfinished...this is bustle and vitality...this is mom and pop...this is beautiful chaos...link in bio!
