In the chaotic moments of a structure fire, civilians’ odds of survival increase dramatically when firefighters combine rapid search efforts with early fire suppression simultaneously.

Simply put, victims trapped by fire need search and suppression working together, carried out by two separate companies. Yet, amid the sophisticated array of tools and tactics in the modern fire service, one of the most potent lifesaving instruments is often overlooked: the humble 2½-gallon water extinguisher, better known as the water can.

Standard issue on nearly every fire apparatus, the water can is frequently underused, perhaps even dismissed as too simple to make a real impact. “It’s too heavy. We are too short-staffed. It can’t extinguish.”

These are some of the excuses firefighters use not to search with the water can. But when a well-trained search team puts it to work, this modest tool becomes a powerful force multiplier, especially when paired with isolation of the fire room door. Using it the right way means firefighters can quickly knock back fire conditions, protect civilian and firefighter life, and buy crucial time for the advancing attack line. It all comes down to mastering three core actions: locate, coordinate, and isolate.

Hard work reveals what you're made of.
Apparently I am an artisanal mix of gristle, 'attitude needs improvement', colorful language, and the boundless enthusiasm of a muddy puppy on a white couch. ☠⚔️☠

What is your standard? Not someone else's standard. Not some trendy BS you saw on social media.

The standard you uphold on a rainy gloomy day when the only thing you want to do is hit the snooze alarm.

Motivation gets you to the starting line, discipline takes you to the finish line.

The quality of a leader is reflected in the standard they hold themselves to.

Preaching readiness from an out-of-shape state holds no weight. You can’t keep telling others how important preparation is while avoiding the work of preparing yourself.

People see what you make time for, what you tolerate in yourself, and whether the standard still matters when holding yourself to it becomes uncomfortable and inconvenient.

A crew deserves more than verbal instructions. They deserve to see an officer training, working through their weaknesses, and taking their own preparation seriously.

That does not mean you have to be the strongest or fastest person in the firehouse. It means you accept the same responsibility you place on everyone else and do the work.

A title does not relieve you of that obligation; it makes it more important to show the crew you don’t ask them to do what you aren’t doing yourself. Not what you did in the past, but what you’re willing to do today.

You are what you do, not what you say others should do. Every time you excuse yourself from the work you expect from your crew, you give them a reason to question your credibility.

Every time you step into that work beside them, you earn their trust.

Before asking whether your people are meeting the standard, take an honest look at how consistently you are meeting it yourself.

Nothing beats a quiet campsite, a cool night, and a little home away from home. 🏕️

They say success comes from making the most of what you have.
I'm still trying to figure out what to do with this bad attitude and questionable judgement...☠⚔️☠
