Best night of sleep the entire trip followed by most expensive coffee ($15 latte, folks!). Today was about ticking off a checklist: Breakfast ✅ Coffee ✅ Bike instead of subways/walking all day (30+km) ✅ Fabric stores for Morgan ✅ Bougie jeans for Erik ✅ Snacks and more coffee ✅ Shibuya & Shinjuku (various specific stores) ✅ Shibuya Scramble ✅ 7/11 snacks ✅ Dinner (okonomiyaki heck yesssss) ✅ Michelin ⭐️ ice cream ✅ Home to pack bikes ✅ Last night in Tokyo!!

Early wake up, butter and bean sandwich for breakfast, down down down to the ocean. Good bye alps. Scored a weekend market surprise and finally ate onigiri from 7/11 with out 1 a day 7/11 biking drink. Watched 2000+ baseball players all along the bike trail. (Thanks Duolingo, I knew I need the word for baseball in the end!) stopped off at the cat temple in Setagaya and then boom. Tokyo. Started checking off the stops (mostly bike shops) on our way to delicious sushi dinner and after over 100km decided that tomorrow would also be a bike day. Cause biking in Tokyo is FUN!

Breakfast on the north side of Lake Kawaguchi. Quick bike to second breakfast/bakery on the south side of Lake Kawaguchi. Another jaunt over to Fugiyoshida to the BEST surprise. We hoped for some cute little shops but there was a literal makers festival with designers selling fabric and various workshops and cool small Japanese brands. Scored so reeeeeally fun fabric and had great chats with some fabric designers. Erik was 75 years old when I was done so we booted off to the next stop (after more coffee) - a luxury outlet mall. Here we saw the worst of humanity and ate burgers. Mine was mushroom with cheese on the INSIDE of the patty. Yum. Very gushy. Also there are at least 3 dogs in strollers in these photos… can you spot them all? Then we hammered up the last hill of the day (through a golf course with nets strung up over the road full of golf balls) and absolutely soared down the other side past 5km of bumper to bumper traffic- so satisfying. Waltzed into what we thought was the most beautiful hotel we’ve seen so far, past the lovely lounge and bar and restaurant and onsen and into our absolute closet of a room. Spoiler, bathrooms are shared and onsens cost extra. But it’s fine, cause we had the most delicious curry for dinner of the whole trip.

Bike ride thoughts: Things that are better in Japan: - manhole covers (there are thousands of different designs) and a fan-run Japanese society of manhole covers. They’re so cool. - Cloud pruning. - Washlets (bougie toilets) no surprise here - Convenience stores (another duh) - Duvet covers (like fitted sheets turned upside down- seems good) - Bike paths (while often unmaintained- they are almost everywhere) - Kabocha pumpkin buns (why don’t we have buns that look like pumpkins and have pumpkin goo on the inside?) - Slipper culture Things I could skip: - Futons. My aged body needs years to get used to this firm a surface. - Pillows full of buckwheat hulls. It’s just not for me. - Giant spiders. Gorgeous day for a bike ride today with views of apparently shy Fugi-san the entire ride. Watched rice patties burn, cruised kms and kms of floodwater canal adjacent paths, ate a giant apple between two people over the course of the entire day (they only seem to have giant apples here). Delicious vegetarian houtou for lunch- kabocha based soup with big honking noodles. Many many cats today but only 1 for pets- mostly very shy. Many orchards and vineyards! 800m climb to end the day and a 2 km long tunnel with a 2 foot wide shoulder in it. Not our favourite but definitely our fasted section of riding yet. More Dutch tourists (they had dried up the past few days). Mt Fuji sunset on the lake.

Day 5 of riding. Tasty treats for breakfast. More dogs in strollers. Needed a bike shop but bike shop #1 was closed so we had a bonus coffee. Detoured to bike shop #2 - success!! Then bike bike biked. All the way to Japanese chilliwack. Then up a big hill with a 7/11 drought. Finally found 7/11 and finally egg salad sandwiched as per pal request. It was tasty. Then another biiiig hill up to the highest point that JR rail go’s in Japan. Huzzah! Also saw giant telescope and satellite dish. Giant. Huge. Then downhill but only when turning left- all right turns uphill for 20km… very strange. Then tiramisu (duh) then dinner and doggie snuggles and scavenger hunt for guesthouse in the dark - also uphill - cause why not.

Weird day today riding from Kusatsu to karuizawa. Pouring rain this morning we procrastinated leaving, but still got wet. Started climbing and the confusion began. We got komooted many many times today. Side quested through some farm land, into some single track between properties and then turned around several times as we got closer to Mt Asama (japans most active volcano). Finally got to the lava rock park which looked post apocalyptic and hasn’t been updated since the 60s really. Eventually skiddadled and then got turned around twice more before our decent to Karuizawa, even being turned back by road toll collectors at one point. That all being said, we finally found some gravel, we finally saw some real fall colours, and we finally got to have solid coffee and pastries at the end of the ride. AND, it was sunny after our first hour of riding :) Also saw another sika doe and a million more dogs in clothing in strollers. Even a fully dressed golden retriever…. Not in a stroller.

More fish for breakfast. Beautiful ride down and up up up to the next onsen town Kusatsu. Got super lucky with an open cafe sitting at the top of our mountain pass today. Had a delicious parfait and coffee. Arrived in Kusatsu, checked out the ski hill (for future reference). Offroaded down a million stairs and magically came out in a hot spring park full of foot soakers. Partook before searching for snacks downtown. Found our way to the center square where the source of the hot spring is. Vvvvvv cool. Also found OUR cat. She’s ours now. Hates everyone else. Watched her bite a little girl- but loooooves us. Checked into our ryokan (with first private onsen!!) and then got Indian food for dinner. It was delicious. I need a break from fish and mushrooms and all things of mysterious texture.

Rest day in Shima! Rest = 10km walk up a hydro dam and around an alpine lake no? Started the day with rice balls in bed. Hungry + jet lag. Waited 3 hrs until Keiseki breakfast. Erik ate a fermented plum - and did NOT approve. First stop was the Spirited Away bridge inspo spot. Apparently this is a big deal. Bear bells. Many bear bells. GIANT hydroelectric dam - saw it from the bottom, saw it from on top, saw it from the sides and saw it across the lake. Saw the dam thing. Views of Shima blue (which is très important here) which was kinda Shima green. No trash bins anywhere but full bathrooms with bidets on every corner. Huntsman spider in one of said bathrooms. Absolutely not- sucked that pee right back up and kept on walking. ***last slide is a photo of the giant spider- this is your warning! *** Post walk reward: Ice coffee, syrupy rice buns, quatro fromaggio pizza (obvs), beer and cheesecake. Tried to hit all the food groups that aren’t fish. The universe seems to be easing me into onsens “gently”. First one had little shower cubicles for semi private bathing before hitting the communal tub. Everything clearly labelled. The ladies who were there left as I arrived. Next one, no privacy, sit on stools next to communal tub and bathe in front of strangers. This time soap bottles only in Japanese and had to ask naked local ladies which was which and they all rushed over at me to help answer which was shampoo. TODAY I sat/ bathed on the little stool out in the open and then got into a blissfully empty outdoor pool which was about 4 person hot tub sized. Promptly another lady joined me and asked me to chat (in Japanese) which was as you can imagine, a challenge. While writhing in social discomfort at being naked, sitting side by side in scalding water with a stranger (albeit polite and friendly) and trying to communicate in 2 different languages or just be silent together. Can’t wait till tomorrroooooowwww. 🤪 this trip is saving me years in therapy.
