✨ This weekend, I had the honor of attending 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫’s 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 production of 𝘗𝘌𝘙𝘐𝘊𝘓𝘌𝘚—a powerful concert adaptation of Shakespeare’s epic about loss, faith, and rediscovery.

𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲, 𝐧𝐨𝐰–𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, more than 100 New Yorkers from across all five boroughs take the stage in the awe-inspiring 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭. 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐞. Together with Broadway stars, they transform Shakespeare’s story into a vibrant celebration of community, joy, and belonging. 💜

Reconceived by playwright and songwriter 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐲 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲, this 𝘗𝘌𝘙𝘐𝘊𝘓𝘌𝘚 is inspired by Gospel music and the rousing power of the Black church. Directed by 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 of the 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐦, the production blends Broadway excellence with the voices of local New Yorkers, reminding us that theater can lift us, heal us, and unite us.

🎭 That’s the beauty of 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬. A major civic artistic program of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 aims to restore and build community by connecting people through the creation of extraordinary works of art. Working with partner organizations in all five boroughs, it invites New Yorkers to take classes, participate in programs, attend performances, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 join in the creation of ambitious works of participatory theater.

𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 creates theater that is not only for the people, but by and of the people as well. It’s a space where we can reflect on the world as it is—and imagine new possibilities for what our society might be.

🎟️ 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞, 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭-𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞, 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭-𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐝. 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤.𝘯𝘺𝘤/𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬.

TL-DR;
I could have never imagined dressing over 100 people in a production. Thanks to the costume team for all of your support, special shoutout to @_adriannehope_ @serabourgeau and @rocio.romanach for lifting me up, I could not have done it without them. Forever thankful for @carlcofield for trusting me with this task of creating a space and dressing representatives of the NYC community for a production made FOR the community. Being reminded of the joy that theatre brings to the masses truly warms my heart.
Fun fact. It was at my sister’s graduation held at @stjohndivinenyc that I received an email of my @yalerep assignment - Twelfth Night, directed by Carl Cofield. So, this piece feels like destiny. Thank you so much for the continued collaboration.
P.S. was not able to capture every character in this play, nor the community . There is A LOT Y’ALL.
