Graphic design: Markel Ahlenius

The volcano has not erupted for five thousand years but at 01:55 on January 23 1973, the inhabitants of the small island Heimaey, were awakened by a strong earthquake. A few minutes later a powerful cascade of lava explodes on the outskirts of town. The police drive around with a megaphone, urging everyone to evacuate immediately.

Forty years later, Erik Berglin travels to the island to find out more about a mysterious death that occurred during this eruption. After a while he realises that he no longer seems to focus on what really happened. Instead his enquiries revolve around the myth-making that can occur when a small community suffers a collective tragedy. Facts have turned into myths while myths have been transformed into facts.

The story evolves and takes the reader on a trip around the world. It can be read as a portrait of the artist, his process and doubts but it is also a depiction of what happens when a whole community has to flee in the middle of the night.

The book is divided in two sections, using a unique double Swiss binding. One part consists of calm landscape images of the solidified lava field, combined with a travel journal with voyeuristic observations of historical events and phenomena relating to Heimaey. The other part contains assemblages made with archive images that have been altered with digital and analog retouch. It also includes extracts from interviews made by the artist during his visits to Iceland

Erik Berglins practice explores the boundaries of what photography can be today.

His works usually have an unexpected twist. They range from interventions in public space, fact/fictional storytelling and appropriation of material found in old books or online. His practice is based around text and photographs but he rarely uses a camera, instead he generates imagery using customized computer algorithms or scissors.

His works stem from a conceptual tradition but feature coincidental, accidental and unexpected connections. Found images are altered or detached from their natural function with references to documentaries, art history and popular culture.

Each project is made with an esthetic aiming to maximize the visual logic for that specific set of images. Subject matters also vary but often circulate around questioning the authenticity of photography. Nature is a common theme. He is more interested in how the images are made, rather than what they depict. Having that said Berglins work is always trying to be visually interesting.

Selected spreads from the book :

”Unfolding Image – A Contemporary Approach to the Japanese Folding Screen is a richly illustrated book that presents a unique exchange between the Japanese folding screen maker Koto Kataoka and five contemporary artists based in Sweden. The book brings together and deepens every aspect of the project – from the initial workshop and exhibitions at Konstnärshuset and the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities (Östasiatiska Museet) in Sweden in 2021, to the final exhibition at the Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo in 2022.

… The book also features in-depth descriptions of the materials and the places of origin that were essential to the project, including Niigata, known for its dense cedar forests and vibrant woodworking industry, and Echizen in Fukui Prefecture, renowned for its handmade washi paper. In September 2024, Karl Patric Näsman returned to Japan to conduct further research and document these significant locations together with Kataoka, resulting in valuable new encounters and documentation that further enrich the book’s context.”

The book is published by Stubborn Books and is currently available to order through my DMs and @stubborn_books
