Great night at the @nmgnetwork holiday party!

This is a surreal moment for me. It may just look like I’m holding a poster.Which I am. But…..
My grandpa Leo came to this country 75 years ago on a movie titled Mutiny on the Bounty.Marlon Brando liked him and he brought him back to this country and that’s how we got into the movie business.My father grew up on movie & TV sets and they were very poor.From 9 to 13 my dad was handicapped in a wheelchair.And then at 14 he could walk again, so he became a stellar athlete.He pitched two games NO HITTER in high school.Two games, nine innings.Nobody hit the ball.Cover of LATIMES. Twice.My dad wanted out of poverty.But his baseball career failed because of his bad hip from his youth.So he turned to acting and Stunts. Trying to get acting roles in a predominantly Caucasian business in the 1960s 70s and 80s was damn near impossible. But he kept at it. And found success. My grandfather died from throat cancer that he received from the on set special FX smoke that they used to use in the old days.He never got to see my dads star rise.I grew up on movie and TV sets with my dad. As a creative and shy kid,my video camera was my best friend and being on movie sets felt like home. Being a movie director has been my dream since I was nine years old. It’s all I ever wanted to do with my life. It’s my first love.It gives my life purpose. It has literally saved my life. I will do it till the day I die. I’ve been at this my entire adult life.
Thank you to everyone who gave me a shot, who believed in me, we trusted me. My family, my friends. Thank you to all the Filmmakers that came before me that inspired me. Filmmaking is not for wimps. It can sometimes feel impossible. Never give up
My Tutu Alice was my biggest supporter, believer and best friend. Sadly she is not here to see this moment. She would’ve been so proud.
I’d like to think somewhere my Tutu Alice and Grandpa Leo are somewhere smiling.
That’s what this poster represents.
This is for them.

That’s a wrap on @ohinalabs. It’s a looot of work, but it’s nice to see so many success stories come out of the lab. Mahalo to an awesome 2022 class and to @keikosugz for winning the Greenlight Award and @georgiemorvis for winning the Judges Award. And cheers to our Ohina Executive Team, mentors and judges who do it for the love of it (and the occasional free drinks). Now let’s make some movies. 🎬🎥🍾

Crista, @supercw, was such an incredible beacon of support for me when I was first starting out in Honolulu at HoMA, and again when I took over at HIFF. She was a beacon of compassion and inclusion at a time when I was inundated with uncertainty and imposter syndrome. She always believed in the vision I had and the work we were doing to support the Hawaii film industry and for that I will be eternally grateful. I attended her birthday party every year - it was always the “who’s who” of HNL - and I am honored to continue to celebrate here and make every effort to continue to support our HI artists in her honor.
