When selecting the participating artists some of the features we looked for were talent, collectability, and notoriety. Art Masters is about the art and artists, so we wanted to showcase both well-known and up-and-coming artists. The exhibit features 15 regional artists who each specialize in various mediums and styles.

"Creating is a way of existence. Each piece is a moment of life documented and preserved through the subconscious technique that I have developed over the years. When I start the day, I naturally want to make something." - Erin Asmussen

Inevitability of Flight (2023. Oil.) by @erinasmussen is the first piece of artwork we would like to share with you from the Art Masters exhibit at @minnehahacc :

“This piece was painted on the prairie in central South Dakota,” said Erin. “It is a combination of the light, sky, clouds, the mystery of our world and how we each manipulate our own time here. The Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly is known for its solitude and magnificent beauty. The Owl peeking out or emerging from the unknown into our world represents change, transformation, hidden knowledge, wisdom, spiritual evolution, good luck, and self-actualization. The bald Eagle is at the base of the piece to carry the whole representing vision, strength, and a higher consciousness.”

The work of Erin Asmussen is tied together by a shared interest in the surreal, the mysterious and the unseen. Tapping into the subconscious yearnings of humanity, the artist acts as a conduit for greater meaning exploring the passage that we are in, feeding off past and future. Erin’s artwork acts as a unique record of the time in which we live. The electric covenant she creates in her work is a pact between herself and the Universe.

Erin received her bachelor’s degree in industrial design technology from the Art Institute of Colorado. Influenced by Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Tim Burton and H.R. Giger, Erin’s surreal characters and landscapes speak to an artistic lineage of intuitive fantasy and introspection. Erin lives and works as an artist on a farm near Agar, SD.

Erin shared a few process photos and videos as she was working on this piece, please check our stories today (or our Art Masters Highlight in our bio) to watch her process of bringing this amazing piece of artwork to life. Follow her account for more views into her creative process and to keep abreast of her future projects as well. 🦋 🦉 🦅
