Twelve years at SDSU. Three degrees later. A dissertation. A Ph.D. graduate.

This weekend I walked across that stage carrying every lesson she ever taught me, every sacrifice she ever made, every time she believed in me before I believed in myself. Before she left this world, I made her a promise. I told her I would carry the Thomas name forward. That I would become Dr. Thomas, not just for me, but for her. For everything she poured into this family, into this life, into me. Today, I kept it. Mom, I kept my promise.

Mom, I wish you were here to see this. I wish I could look out into that crowd and find your face. I wish I could hear you say you’re proud. But since I couldn’t bring you to the stage, I brought the stage to you. I laid my hood and my tam at your feet today, because this degree belongs to you as much as it does to me. Maybe more.

And to my dad, thank you. Thank you for standing beside me through every chapter of this journey, for showing up when it mattered most, and for carrying our family forward with a strength and grace that has always inspired me. You raised me to work hard, to stay humble, and to never give up. I see you, Dad. I love you. This is yours too.

And to everyone who walked alongside me on this road…my fiancée Amanda, my family, my mentors, my colleagues, my friends, and every person who offered a word of encouragement, a moment of grace, or a belief in me when I struggled to believe in myself, thank you. A doctorate may have one name on it, but it takes a village to earn one. I am because you are. I am grateful beyond what words can hold.

And now, carrying her name and her legacy into the halls of academia, I carry something even greater, her message. Simple, profound, and more radical than any theory I’ve ever studied: love everyone equally, and always listen to your heart. In a world of higher education that can sometimes forget the human beings at the center of it all, I promise to never forget.

I hope to change this world, Mom. And I hope to do it the way you always showed me how. I hope wherever you are, you know. I hope you felt it today.

Dr. Thomas, but forever, always your son 🎓❤️

We’re so proud of these promising education researchers and difference makers! Five people in business casual attire pose in a convention center hallway.

This #ASHE2025 was a space and place needed to talk, love, and spread my wings more than ever. Everyday a new challenge emerges in our field. It’s these moments, these spaces that we craft in these conferences that fill me up and make me want to keep doing my work. I can’t wait to keep re-imagining our futures, together in PR next year ♥️
