County Donegal was #24 in my Read Around Ireland challenge this year with Saoirse by @charleen_hurtubise. It tells the story of Sarah who escapes life in America for a fresh beginning in Ireland, along the way adopting a new name, Saoirse. This gaelic name means freedom which seems fitting for her new start. The idyllic life she builds as a promising artist with a young family and partner she adores begins to unravel when she is named as a prize winner in a national competition and the secrets of her former life are revealed, threatening to destroy everything.
Set in the 1990s, which seems a recently short time ago (well to this 50 something reader), what struck me was the lack of freedom women had in Ireland particularly around pregnancy. It was also pre-internet which meant that Saoirse’s true identity staying anonymous was totally plausible, something that today seems unimaginable!
The descriptions of remote Donegal are beautiful, I could see why Saoirse found such peace there. It is a definitely a place that I would like to visit.
I liked the development of Saoirse who is in her late teens at the start of the book. Yet the abuse that she has suffered as a child has shaped and aged her so that she seems more mature. Art is used to gradually reveal Saoirse’s past and serve almost as a therapy. Saoirse is far from perfect, yet I found myself rooting for her and hoping she could shake off her abusive past. This book poses the questions can we ever be free of a trauma from our youth? Can we love and be loved when that hasn’t been experienced in the formative years?

❓If you needed to change your identity, what would your new name be?

Happy publication day to Pop Culchie: The Irish Popular Culture That Made Us, out nationwide in all good bookshops today📚🇮🇪

I always appreciate when writers are honest on here about how their books actually come together, so I thought I’d give you a little insight into the road that brought me to this very day of publication on the slides that follow (soundtracked by Shayne Ward obviously - it is a book on pop culture after all)!

Basically, if you really believe in your idea and your book, it will find a home somewhere and it will get published. Rejection and failure is just all part of the process!

Now, please buy Pop Culchie by the truck load people 🤣🤣
