Mini photo/video dump of the past few months @bridges.academy

My main takeaways from the @bridges.academy were culture, consistency, curiosity & community.

Culture: It was refreshing to attend classes that intentionally incorporated indigenous South African music elements & instruments through lessons by @dizu_plaatjies and Music Theory by @ntando_ngcume It was a beautiful reminder that African music is the root, we need to have more reverence for it and where we come from. Embracing modern & classical music is great but there is so much to be gained from taking it back to our roots.

Creative Community: Creativity is really a team sport! Coming from an acting background, I’m used to attending castings alone, attending auditions alone, rehearsing & memorising lines alone, our path can become a very solitary one if we allow it to be. I’ve learnt that it’s very different in the music space. It was incredibly inspiring to be around such collaborative, versatile & talented creatives in their own respective disciplines, that kind of energy is contagious.

Consistent Curiosity: The learning truly never ever stops. Yeyi! You rest, you rust, for realll! I was reminded that the best way to feed your creativity is to stay curious, allow yourself to be a beginner over and over again while keeping an open mind to newness, which we experienced firsthand through classes like Music Production by @siphetebeka Improv by @Tamithh Live Sound by @dj_sintu_ Events Management by @Kevinribbans Yoga by @i_am_pearlntanyana Entrepreneurship by @bonginhlanhladube and Mindfulness.

Lastly, the music business & industry insights through various informative panel discussions & activations featuring music figures like @damian_lazarus @pilanibubu @sheltonforbez @kila_g_ @zander_brand @athie_umgido @fosta_sa

Activations by @folklorefestival.za @vervemagazine @stag.not @capitecbank and many more.

I don’t know what I was expecting when I initially applied to this program but it definitely exceeded my expectations. I’ve learnt, grown and discovered so much about music and myself. I’ve gained much needed clarity about the direction I’d like to take my skills moving forward. GRATEFUL.
