National Children’s Theatre Alliance Breakfast ☀️
Joined the panel as an independent artist, alongside some of the industry’s heroes.

As part of Wild Things, the first international children’s theatre festival at the Sydney Opera House, we came together to talk about the future of theatre for young audiences.

I wanted to share that making good work is only part of the journey. We also need to give that work a chance to live beyond its first production, with more support for touring, long-term relationships with venues, and opportunities for artists to keep growing.

Growing up in Japan, my mum subscribed our family to a local theatre membership, so we could enjoy live performances every month — from puppetry to musicals and classical music. Theatre became a familiar, joyful part of my childhood.

And to my fellow independent artists, producers, presenters and everyone who cares about theatre for young audiences: I’d love to connect. Let’s keep sharing our experiences, supporting each other.

One last thing: if you’re feeling a bit down, go and see some children’s theatre. Watching children giggle, gasp and react so honestly to what’s happening on stage is an absolute delight and pretty good for the soul.

Thanks @monkeybaatheatreco for having me.

We went in thinking Avery might be a little scared of the sharks… and came out completely obsessed. 🦈

Erth’s Shark Dive: Live on Stage was such an unexpected favourite for us. The life-sized shark puppets, lights, sound and immersive staging made the whole experience feel like we had actually entered an underwater world.

What I loved most was how naturally the show blended art + science + storytelling. It was beautiful and entertaining, but Avery was also learning about sharks, evolution, conservation and our relationship with the ocean without it ever feeling like a lesson.

And the sweetest part? Halfway through, Avery told me she wanted the show to be longer because she loved it so much. 🥹

Also at Carriageworks right now is Shipwreck Odyssey, an interactive underwater adventure where kids can explore the Great Barrier Reef, play and discover at their own pace. Perfect for little ocean explorers.

📍 Carriageworks, Sydney
🦈 Erth’s Shark Dive: recommended 5+ | $25pp
🐠 Shipwreck Odyssey: suitable for all ages | free weekdays, $5 weekends

There’s lots on at @carriageworks these school holidays!

Here’s our top 3 for some family fun:

1. Erth’s Shark Dive: Live on Stage is a beautiful show that will give you a new respect for sharks. Our first time seeing an @erthaustralia show and we loved it! Tickets are $25 per person.

2. Shipwreck Odyssey is interactive fun for the kids and they have the comfiest bean bags to relax on as well. 😌 Free during the week or $5 on weekends.

3. It was our first time visiting the Carriageworks Farmers Markets and there were so many amazing stalls. I can’t believe I missed getting footage of all the beautiful flowers. 💐 The markets are on every Saturday.

What are your plans for the school holidays?

SNEAK PEEK 👀

@erthaustralia Shark Dive: Live on Stage at @carriageworks Life-sized shark puppetry, audience participation, magical storytelling and a show that educates while it entertains.

Shark Dive follows a young girl named Salt whose friendship with an injured baby shark takes the whole audience on a journey through our oceans from prehistoric sea creatures to the deep sea life that exists today. It is visually spectacular and kids are going to love this one!

This is not your average kids show. It is theatrical, emotional and magical. The team at Erth have done it again.

A huge shoutout to Scott for the invitation, we are so grateful for you and your teams work🙏 Erth Visual & Physical Inc.
