The Danielson Monument Trail is one of the most rewarding hikes in the western Santa Monica Mountains. Here are some interesting facts:

* 🥾 Length & difficulty: The hike is approximately 8.2–8.8 miles round trip with about 1,900–2,000 feet of elevation gain, making it a moderately strenuous to challenging hike.
* 🏞️ Location: It begins from Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa in Newbury Park, a gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
* 🪦 The monument: The trail leads to the Danielson Monument, which honors the Danielson family, early ranch owners whose land later became part of today’s protected parklands.
* 🌄 Amazing views: Along the climb you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Conejo Valley, Sycamore Canyon, the Boney Mountain Wilderness, and on exceptionally clear days, the Channel Islands and the Pacific Ocean.
* 🌼 Spring is spectacular: After winter rains, the meadows are covered with colorful wildflowers, making spring one of the best times to visit.
* 🌳 Varied terrain: The route passes through open grasslands, shady sycamore groves, seasonal creeks, and chaparral-covered hillsides.
* 💧 Seasonal waterfall: If conditions are right, you’ll pass a small seasonal waterfall and creek pools near the lower portion of the trail.
* 🦅 Wildlife: It’s common to see hawks, deer, lizards, rabbits, and many native birds. Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes during warmer months.
* ☀️ Come prepared: Large sections of the trail are exposed to the sun, so bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and start early during summer. Long pants are recommended because some sections can become overgrown with poison oak nearby.
* 🐕 No dogs: Because parts of the route enter Point Mugu State Park backcountry, dogs are not permitted on this trail.

For hikers looking for a rewarding workout with history, beautiful scenery, and fewer crowds than many nearby trails, Danielson Monument Trail is considered one of the hidden gems of the Newbury Park area.
