Appreciating the intricacies that go into cutting and polishing gemstones ,GEMFUND.org has in an effort to preserve the craftmanship and legacy of lapidary, has had our level three (2 years into cutting) students work closely with one of Kenya's most renowned precision cutter, @Marvin Wambua G.G (GIA) from Amor Gems. One of the most powerful tools we have to ensure the survival and growth of such skills is apprenticeship, understanding our trainees can only be as good as who they learn from. They were eager, trust me, which is great because it is breaking the narrative that lapidary is at risk of fading into obscurity!! Lapidary holds immense economic and artistic value within the #gemstone #value chain as we continue to invest in the #nextgeneration with #sustainable high-value skills that aim in preserving heritage crafts and cultural identity inevitably supporting local economies and artisanship. As Marvin would put it “In lapidary work, the precision of a cut, the feel of the wheel, and the intuition to bring out the soul of a stone can’t be taught by theory alone. There is a flow to it. These are learned through patient observation, repetition, and direct guidance.” We welcome insights and collaborative endeavors into the work we do, so feel free to reach out!! @endeki @es_sanders @muchanginyawira @amorgems

Where do you wear your Gem X tattoo? As we cruise into the weekend, we are channeling our homegirl Esmee Sanders, new jewelry friend (and coolest Vespian) in Amsterdam 🛵💁‍♀️ She took the Gem X tattoo to new places, and left us doubled over in amazement and amusement as she rode off into the sunset. We can’t wait to visit you again! 🇳🇱💎✖️ @es_sanders @draw_me_a_jewel #gemxcursions

Magic Wood Picasso used to say “learn the rules like a pro, so that you can break them like an artist.” It’s a motto that seems to have inspired @silviafurmanovich path into jewellery. Born in Brazil into a family of goldsmiths hailing from Italy, Silvia knew all the written and unwritten rules of jewellery since tender age and was ready to break them when she founded her brand about two decades ago. First, she vanquished the notion of preciousness is linked to material value and proceeded to revive the ancient craft of wood marquetry fusing it with unusual elements such as woven bamboos and netsukes, the small adornments worn on kimonos. She’s this made a reputation as a nature-inspired creative alchemist. Some of @silviafurmanovich latest creations are here and they sometimes come with a matching clutch - just like in the olden days when women would buy bags from their jeweller. All these pieces are from a selection @auverture a jewellery-specialised retailer with an eye for interesting jewellery- both modern and vintage. #silviafurmanovich #woodmarquetry #bamboojewelry #bamboojewellery #carvedwood #inspiredbybrazil #braziliandesign #artedemadeira #brincoslindos #altajoalheria #joalheriabrasileira An earring and a bag with wood marquetry in yellow and brown toned

Lenfant’s Midas touch While I was in Maastricht a few weeks ago, I stopped at the Auverture popup in town to discover their latest selection of contemporary and vintage jewellery. This bracelet by gold maverick designer Georges Lenfant was simply irresistible. Georges Lenfant and his son Jacques could be described as the unsung heroes of 20th Century French jewellery.  Since the beginning of the 1900s, from their workshop at 47 rue des Petits-Champs - which was just a short walk from the glamour of the Place Vendôme - Georges and Jacques would create and sign pieces that were ultimately sold by the likes of Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, René Boivin and Mellerio dits Meller. In the 1950’s the duo collaborated with Vacheron Constantin to make watches for Hermes. Jacques Lenfant in particular was a highly skilled goldsmith able to craft a myriad different patterns, shapes and textures that could be used to create a seemingly infinite array of chains.  Finely woven textures, a combination of different colour golds and varying circular and twist motifs are all typical of Lenfant pieces, sometimes accented with a sprinkling of diamonds and always finely made, they remain highly desirable and wearable today.  #goldsmith #midastouch #goldchains #braceletdoré #xxcentury #antiquejewelry #georgeslenfant #lenfant #vintagejewellery #jewelleryhistorian
