Today we will host the launch of ‘Untold Forms of Latin America´ at Paraíso Fair (@paraiso_fair) Untold Forms brings together projects that expand the notion of Latin America. What does it mean to use this connotation today? The publication explores notions of territory, ecology, vernacular and popular practices, and science fiction. It is an invitation to challenge stereotypes, confront history, and escape identity categories. Researcher Mariana Cunha (@marianacunha___), one of the publication’s contributors, will read an extract from her text and expand on her research project. Don’t miss it!

Organizing Life! Furniture keeps life in order. Shelves are tools that help systems function. Shelves provide guidance. Shelves represent culture. It doesn’t matter whether these shelves are in museums, libraries, or supermarkets, because through their organized contents, they reveal how cultures access their knowledge, their identity, their objects, and—in the case of food—even life itself. The supermarket is a museum of the Global North. Our parents’ generation stacked preserved food, flour, eggs, rice, dried goods, smoked meats, and so on—all stored in canning jars and bottles—on shelves in their pantries to get through the winter and keep the food away from rodents. They moved the food out of reach of mice and rats by placing it high up. They did this with the help of shelves, which in turn organized the food according to various principles. The rise of the supermarket led to the disappearance of pantries from homes. Even during our architecture studies 25 years ago, pantries were no longer a topic of discussion. The supermarket has become the pantry. In the Global North, people store their food off-site for a fee. The supermarket shelf represents the total, primal trust of entire societies in a capitalist, profit-driven distribution system. For the Eat Art performance “postcolonial supper club” at the Burgos Biennial, we designed a shelf that trapped Martin inside. Half-crammed inside, he tried—faceless and contorting his body—to reach the food sorted by color and distribute it to our 150 visitors. ¡Bienvenidxs a Mirar Distinto 2026! 🪸 Foto: Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo Arte: @osirisdelosantos

Imprisoned in a Shelf! Design speaks. Design tells us how to use objects. Design is part of everyday life and an integral part of every culture. Most of the time, design is an object through which we, as people in society, represent ourselves or classify ourselves as individuals within groups. Furniture, for example, says a lot about its users and their culture. On the other hand, it is precisely this furniture that tells us how to handle our food. The shelf is essential to globalized food systems. Every day, residents of the Global North rush past shelves to take food from these pieces of furniture. Shelves are the heart of the supermarket. Shelves organize food according to cultural norms. They are a principle of order. They create order and desire. As consumers, we are encouraged to take as much as possible from these shelves. Behind these shelves, a host of invisible people are at work. All over the world, these very workers toil to produce food, transport it, and ultimately, every day, arrange millions of edible products on shelves according to defined systems. For the Eat Art performance “postcolonial supper club” at the Burgos Biennial, we designed a shelf that trapped Martin inside. Half-crammed into it, he struggled—faceless and contorting his body—to reach the food sorted by color and distribute it to our 150 visitors.

Sunken in the Table! Like all other design objects, furniture speaks to us. Ever since our research for the book “Eat Design”, we’ve been engaged with the design of furniture. The fact that Martin is a trained cabinetmaker often helps us in this regard. For the performance “postcolonial supper club,” which we recently had the opportunity to stage as the opening event for the Burgos Biennial, we designed furniture. The second act of the performance focuses, among other things, on the table. According to conventional ideals, in the Global North, meals are supposed to be eaten at the table and in company. According to sociologist Jean-Claude Kaufmann, the dining table is an evolution of the altar. The altar serves to bring sacrificial food closer to the gods; it is raised toward the heavens. Centuries would pass before the 75-centimeter-high dining table became established as a distinct piece of furniture. It likely first appeared in the dining halls of medieval monasteries, where the dining table also marked hierarchies. The modern dining table, reserved solely for eating, has only existed since we’ve had enough space for it in our homes and apartments. Our grandparents also used their only table for work. Today, the table symbolizes the ideal family. All too often, this idealized group is fed and served by a woman. The goddesses of the earth, of agriculture, or of the hearth fire have become a despised servant. In Burgos, we placed Sonja, like a defenseless embryo, into a specially carved recess in a table. There, she cracked open the shells of a hundred hard-boiled eggs and distributed them to the audience. Salt and bread were on the table. @honeyandbunny_sonja @bienalburgos photos @escobart #BurgosBienal #eatart #burgos @fundacioncajadeburgos @emilionavarromenduina #postcolonialsupperclub
