POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I don’t think we ever talk about how scary it is to be be a poet. Getting on stage sharing your most intimate feelings with the world, or even for the audience. Having to leave the house not knowing if the poet is going to be good or not, scary thoughts.

Even as a platform, pressure from the poets, wanting to please the audience and satisfy the venue. We be scared to post the flyers sometimes because we don’t know if the event will be a success or not.

But the subject of out last class was remember why you started. And in us doing so. We came to one conclusion we have to keep going.

So October 30th. We are back at @greenroomsocialclub for another @slightwork.events experience.

The life you want may be on the other side of your worst fear. Come overcome those fears with us.

You can sign the list at the door for an open mic slot or Dm us in advance for showcase tickets.

REMEMBER WHY WE STARTED. ✍🏾

Three years ago, Sharpen My Pen started with a simple idea: create a space where artists could get on stage, share their work, and get better.

From constructive feedback on stage, to making sure artists are compensated. From creating experiences the audience can enjoy, to making sure every person involved in the process feels valued.

The host.
The person at the door.
The stage hand.
The setup and breakdown crew.
The designers.
The artists.
The venue owners who open their doors.
The drink vendors who serve with a smile.
The vendors who bring their own art and products.

Everybody is a piece of the process.

And that’s what the building blocks have always been about.

@ese.network x Everybody Support Everybody.

This is an ESE activation, and I’m truly grateful that we’ve reached three years on this journey.

So today, we celebrate.

Come out tonight, share the space with us, support the artists, enjoy yourself, and help us celebrate three years of Sharpen My Pen.

🎟️ $15 at the door

And as always, if you need help getting in, reach out to us before the show. We’ll do our best to help..

We’ll see you tonight at the @greenroomsocialclub

Never take your ideas for granted

This platform started with an idea to record poets while they were on stage.

The event started with an idea to give poets feedback on stage they can take with them to refine their craft.

What has happened between then and now is unimaginable, especially for those who have not been able to witness.

But that’s the beautiful thing, you may not always know what your doing until you look back and see what you’ve done. We’ve not only had a front row seat in our development but been apart of watching others grow as well.

Continuing the journey can get hard many times along the way, a message from us to those going through that phase right now.

We ask you to remember why you started.

Come celebrate Sharpen My Pen 3 year anniversary with us this Friday @greenroomsocialclub

We’ve been managing to capture some dope monumental shows on our pop up tour. From amazing features, wedding engagements, final shows, anniversary, record breaking milestones etc.

Last night was no different. We were able to make it out to Houston to experience @asopoetry_

Unfortunately it is their last show in Houston for a while. @free.k._ is continuing her journey elsewhere and this was also her send off.

So much love, so much art so much community in the room.

Gratitude for being able to catch this experience and see all the amazing poets.

Sorry if you missed it. Hopefully you can catch some of their performance videos.

Also S/o to @tastebudzzzsportsbar for hosting the event. Check out this black owned establishment of your in the Houston area. #healingthroughart #poetrywithpurpose #houstonpoets #locallegends #everybodysupporteverybody

We all have a part to play and sometimes I try to play all the parts. I’ve overwhelmed myself with just the amount of energy that it takes to switch from hat to hat.

Even when I take a step back and choose to take things slower. When I stop trying to fix the whole world, I still find small moments to feel like I’m making a difference.

The world can be what you make it. Just don’t give up.

We would love to give a special shoutout and congratulations to @demhajpoetry for reaching 4 years as a platform. That is a milestone many of us can say is not easy to get to these days. The amount of work it takes to stay consistent, especially when showing up for others.

@4jahmed is one of the founders of the platform and he had these words to say on the stage. I think they speak for themselves when trying to figure out what you’re looking to get from this platform.

Yea you can do the work, but do you know how to work with the client ?

Across many spectrums that I do I come across a common factor. The customer is not always right and the service provider gets tired of constantly dealing with the client that think they know best.

One thing I know is even with transactional relationships. Communication is still key. Something both clients and us service providers can always be better at.

Sometimes when I’m called to do a project I have to figure it out from start to finish and it’s always a learning curve.

The goal is to make a collapsible background stand that allows the artist/vendor to set up and take it down easily without hassle.

Before we get into making it look pretty I’m still writing through the mechanics to make sure it functions properly and is light enough to carry.

Check back for the 2nd prototype soon. Or contact us for your special build project today.

A snack tile job goes a long way when it comes to finishing a bathroom. It’s one of those things that make a person feel like things are coming together.

Connect with us if you’re in the middle of your project and just need that extra push.
