As these two have graduated and moved away to college over the last few months, I’ve been reflecting a lot as mothers do when their children move on to a different stage of life. Every time I would try to think of what to say about these twins that God gave me, words seemed to fail me. But the one truth that I keep coming back to is that the Lord has radically changed who I am through my journey with them.

From finding out that I was having twins, through a very eventful and difficult pregnancy, through Eli’s surgery at six days old, through months of his sickness and another surgery at two years old, and ultimately through the joy of Jonathan and I partnering with the Lord in raising them, He has been kind and patient and gracious and faithful through it all.

Some thoughts on what He has taught me through my journey with them—

-To surrender my plans to His, and that His plans are always better.
-To trust in Him to take care of everything, instead of trusting myself to be able to fix things once I finally realized I couldn’t.
-And maybe the one that is central to all my change and growth— That He is infinitely more than the God in a box I had known Him as for the first 32 years of my life.

I’ve learned from Eli’s boldness, passion, resilience, grace, loyalty, generosity, curiosity, and creativity.

I’ve learned from Cooper’s patience, thoughtfulness, service, curiosity, grace, gentleness, and empathy.

There has been a definitive shift in who I am today because of what started with a life twist that honestly both terrified and frustrated me because it did not fit in my plan. I don’t know who I would still be if it wasn’t for these two babies and all the hard and beautiful life that we’ve lived since that day 19 years ago when I had an ultrasound at 9 weeks and my doctor said, “Do you see what I see?” I am beyond grateful that they were part of His plan, not mine.

I love you immensely and am incredibly proud of who you both are, Eli Patrick and Cooper Bradford. I miss you terribly, but the world needs what you both have to offer, most of all the Light that lives inside of you.

All my love and always cheering you on, Mom 🩵🩵
