We’re back with our General Manager, Diana, for part two of her favourite spots in the Village.
This time, she takes us through Market Row to highlight the incredible traders, makers, and spaces that give this community its heart. ❤️

Ahead of Jamaican Independence Day, we asked none other than the man, the myth, the legend that is Stafford of @healthyeatersbrixton to take us to some of his favourite Jamaican-owned businesses across Brixton Village and Market Row. 🇯🇲

How many have you visited? 💚🖤💛

Market Row has a little bit of everything.

Independent traders, family-run restaurants, hidden gems, familiar faces and stories tucked behind every doorway.

It’s the kind of place you don’t just visit — you wander through, linger in and come back to.

This is what makes Brixton Village special. 🖤

Greetings @fermenting.cultures family!

Arriving in London from Ghana in the 1960s, my parents became regular users of Brixton Market. Its cultural diversity and tropical foods provided a much-needed sense of home. Decades later, Brixton Market is embedded into the daily rhythm of my own life. It has provided the lifeblood of @fermenting.cultures, allowing us to source and celebrate fermented foods of the African diaspora from here in south London.

Brixton Market is again under threat from property developers. Other historical street markets across London (@latinelephant, @saveridleyroad, @savebushmarket) face similar threats.

Street markets provide London’s working class and ethnically diverse communities with access to affordable, healthy, culturally relevant food. They help give us autonomy over our diets as an essential alternative to supermarkets. They provide vital spaces of connection. Their loss would be a disaster for London.

We need your help. Please support the @btcassociation #buybackbrixton campaign, which aims to purchase Brixton Market, bringing it into community ownership. Support sister campaigns to save London’s street markets. ✊✊✊

If you’ve walked through the Village, you know that the soul of our market lies in the hands and hearts of traditional traders like Lurline at Esme’s Organics.

More than just a store, this is a place of healing, heritage, and high-quality seasonal gems. 🥥🌿 Today, Lurline is taking us back to school on the power of tropical nutrition.

Leave any comments you have for Lurline in our comments! 🏝️✨

🎬 Brixton’s Black Businesses 🎬
Created by @renaissancestudios.ldn (2025)

Over the past year, we’ve been working closely with our Black Business forum members on a series of initiatives to support and meet the needs of our Black-owned and operated businesses here in Brixton. Including a bespoke Black Brixton map and an ongoing photography project, the Brixton Black Business Weekend in Summer and our Black Business Social a few months ago.

One clear priority was promotion and marketing, so we teamed up with local production company Renaissance Studios to create a series of short films spotlighting businesses across five categories:

✨ Professional Services
🍽️ Food & Beverage
🛍️ Retail
💇🏾 Hair & Beauty
🎨 Creative industries

These short films celebrate the incredible breadth of Black-owned businesses in Brixton and some of the ways you can Eat InBrixton, Shop InBrixton, Explore InBrixton and Work InBrixton. Whether you’re a local or visiting, there’s always something new to discover.

We’ll be sharing the final films with all participating businesses so you can expect to see many more reminders of how to spend your time InBrixton

💳 And remember, you can use the Gift Brixton gift card in over 75 stores across Brixton, including our Black Businesses. Visit the InBrixton website or one of our local sales points to get yours today.

A huge thank you to all our Forum members and film participants for your time, ideas and energy, we truly couldn’t have done this without you ❤️

This October, we celebrated the incredible work of Brixton’s Black-owned and operated businesses with our Black Business Social 💛

Hosted in @brixton.village by Diana Nabagereka, Chair of our Black Business Forum, the evening brought together inspiring conversations, community spirit, and delicious food from @thesuyapit

We reflected on our shared achievements — from professional business photography (2023) and the Brixton Black Business Weekend (2024), to the premiere of our Black Brixton short films, created by @renaissancestudios.ldn (2025).

We also shared exciting updates on what’s next — including the launch of Gift Brixton, our Brixton-wide gift card, and InBrixton, our new consumer website coming this November.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and continues to shape the work of our Black Business Forum — helping us better understand and champion the aspirations of our Black-owned and operated businesses in Brixton 🖤

Massive thank you and shout to @annamariedescartes for keeping the tunes running throughout the evening 💃

Brixton Village has always been powered by Black-owned businesses – this month, we’re spotlighting a few you can visit and support, including:

🍴 @danclairskitchen – Caribbean comfort food, straight from the heart

🍰 @mishantygroup – handmade cakes and sweet treats that feel like home

🌍 @addisinbrixton – authentic Ethiopian dishes made to share

✨ @esmes_roots – a treasure trove of fashion, beauty, and community spirit

This Black History Month (and always), we celebrate the creativity, heritage, and resilience that shape the Village. Come through, support, and enjoy.
