I’m partial to epistolary novels, and thrilled for the success of a book about a woman in her 70s by a debut author who endured 20 years of rejection letters, but I must admit the correspondence that won my heart was the letters from Mr. March to his beloved Marmee. How do you capture the little moments? The day-to-day that builds into your life story?

I keep what I call a “Joy Jar”— a log of something beautiful that happens each day. It’s an exercise in gratitude. In the good times the jar holds entire stories, text exchanges, photographs. In the harder times, barely-there snippets.

I’ve kept a daily log since early 2024, and in what turned into a year of great transition – the loss of loved ones and a job – it became both a record capturing my life as it happened … and as I chose to experience it.

A year in, I began re-reading the excerpts, a chance to look back in real time at how my life has morphed in (at first) small, almost un-noticeable ways, building to change so big I barely recognize where I am now from where I was then. Mostly it has shown me that during a period of great loss, I was carried by a (growing!!) community of people who refused to let me fall.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my next page — not just my new literacy nonprofit, @nextpageworkshop, of the same name (coincidence? certainly not) – but rather what I want out of my own future more generally. And while I’m not one of those people who maps out my life (I don’t even bother with a calendar some weeks), I do have an idea of the direction. It’s a route laid out in these past few months: my first public reading in New York, shooting a new doc in LA, lots and lots of picnics and terrace parties and @harlemrun … and with it the joy I’d been seeking all along.

So no matter what part of the story you’re in, here’s to turning the page. I hope your next one is filled with all the joy you need to carry you through.✨
