POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

No flowery language to celebrate @espicerrice’s birthday today! Just some weird science illustrations from our upcoming book UNDERCOVER CONVERSATIONS. It’s the third and final book in our trilogy of fun facts about the world around us. Eleanor and I have talked a lot about these books, and they’re great for the funny, smart curious kids in your life. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how to portray some of the science—how do trees communicate? how do plants chat? how do animals and insects know things? how will the publisher try to market this book? So I drew the images as I have before, in my loose sketchbook style. And hope you will be delighted by them and learn things that my scientist friend Eleanor writes about eavesdropping on chatty flora and fauna in the natural world.

Available for preorder now, out in bookshops November 10.

📚BOOK REVIEW BY MY 8-YEAR-OLD📚

The Deadliest Flower by Eleanor Spice Rice

I love this book and I will give it five out of five stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I liked learning about new flowers. But, I also found this book sad and heartbreaking because I didn’t know before that flowers could harm humans. I only knew about poison ivy. But I learned that’s how plants protect themselves. I learned about the flowers that you shouldn’t touch. The book is well written and has colorful pictures.

Thank you so much to @nortonyoungreaders for sending us this beautiful book! My kiddo finished it in two days. We highly recommend adding this book to your home library.

We had a wonderful time hosting Our State Magazine and Dr. Eleanor Spicer Rice at Piedmont Wildlife Center! 🐾 They joined us to film our Opossum Ambassador, Peaches, for Our State’s feature, “Backyard Superheroes,” all about North America’s only native marsupial: the Virginia Opossum. 💚

After the Rain by Eleanor Spicer Rice, PhD @espicerrice
Illustrated by Fiona Lee @fionalee_draws
.
I love when it rains and I also love the smell after the rain. I also love seeing how everything is outside after the rain, like the worms you don’t usually see. In this book we join a girl, her grandma and their dog exploring nature after the rain. They find different creatures moving or coming out of hiding. There’s also words that are learned throughout the book like evaporation. I like how at the end of the book there is definitions for some of the words used in the book. This is a wonderful book and I love the illustrations.

We asked you what you wanted to know about summer insects, and half of your questions were about mosquitoes. And so Dr. Eleanor Spicer Rice is here for the first of her two-part summer bugaganza! And then it’s time for your feedback in our arbitrarily named “Mailbag! Friends Edition.”

Some fun new additions to Blake’s bookshelf thanks to @walkerpicturebooks

What do you look for in children’s picture books?

Fun storytelling? Vivid imagery? A social message? Unique themes?

My daughter is very visual and all of these picture books are ones she loves to sift through. The illustrations are all so striking and I love how different the styles are.
