40 Years of PAGE magazine: From #Information to #Inspiration

Exactly 40 years ago, as editor-in-chief, I put together the pilot issue of PAGE with publisher Thomas Rehder: a slim, 36-page magazine that we handed out for free at ORGATECHNIK, the office technology trade fair in Cologne, from October 16–21, 1986.

This is what the first official issue looked like in spring 1987. Back then, PAGE was published quarterly … just as it is again today.

After a redesign in late 1989, PAGE became a monthly magazine. This is issue 3/1991, with a special focus on type. @espiekermann‘s ITC Officina made its debut, and the issue also featured my interview with German type designer Georg Salden. The cover star: the numeral 3 from Salden’s typeface Polo.

My favorite cover is issue 12/1990: an Advent calendar. We financed the extra cost of die-cutting the 24 little doors by selling 24 tiny ads, each measuring just 32 × 32 mm. One of them came from FontShop, which had been founded only two months earlier …

This is FontShop’s ad for the PAGE Advent calendar, designed by Just van Rossum, who was doing an internship at MetaDesign in Berlin at the time. His comment: “The guys at the film output shop nearly died laughing when I picked up the two films for the ad.”
And note: this two-color ad was produced using frequency-modulated screening. Enlarge!

The latest issue of PAGE, published this morning: 156 pages. What began as a source of information has become a source of inspiration. The shift makes perfect sense — and it works.
Today, we get our information online. Inspiration, on the other hand, can still come from a beautifully printed magazine that smells of ink and paper — something that lets us leave the virtual world behind for half an hour and return to the real one.

Berlin, vote!
On September 20, we decide what kind of city we want to live in. The results in Saxony-Anhalt show us that democracy cannot be taken for granted—we must protect it together.
Stand up for diversity, respect and human dignity—and against racism, homophobia, hate and fascism.
Your vote matters. For an open Berlin—for everyone.
