Gema was born in Madrid, spent eight years living in London, and built a life that looked good on paper.

But somewhere between schedules, work, and waiting for the next weekend, she realised she had forgotten an old dream: living close to the ocean.

Then, during a trip to Bali, she tried surfing for the first time.

What started as a few lessons became something much bigger. Surfing brought back a feeling of freedom she didn’t know she had been missing. It reconnected her with nature, with herself, and with the life she actually wanted to live.

Eventually, she left London and moved to the Portuguese coast.

Today, the sea is part of her everyday life, through surfing, diving, travel, surf content creation, and hosting surf retreats that bring other people closer to the water too.

For @essentiallygem, the ocean means freedom.

A place where she doesn’t need to control everything.
A place where she can be present, adapt, and learn to dance with the waves.
