I made something new! The Divine Masculine art exhibition at Goodyear Arts challenged me to find a new rabbit hole to explore. I had many ideas for this show but it wasn’t until a week before the deadline that I had my electric moment of oh-yeszzz-I-must-draw-this-pregnant-frog. So I started drawing pregnant male frogs giving birth inside of a man’s mouth and vocal cords. My drawing is whimsy and maybe fantastical but the frog species is real. I encourage you to look up the Darwin’s frog from Chile. The male frogs swallow fertilized eggs to keep them safe and they develop in the father frog’s vocal sac. Some researchers say the frog doesn’t eat while the froglets are forming, for 6-8 weeks. This is called neomely. The papa will ultimately give birth from his mouth. There’s fun footage of this incredible event that I’ll post soon…there are wonky ai versions of this floating around, don’t believe the slop.
These tiny frog dads are certainly inspiring enough, but my rabbit holes are deep. I started looking up the origin of the “frog in my throat” saying. I found something from a mid 1800s “how to be a man” guide which said for young men to practice saying “No”. This book had me screaming WTF because there’s a chapter on “saying no”
It just made me think of all the times I was told to say no, as a tiny growing girl in the 80s. The late 1900s 💀
Here’s a fun coincidence- the Darwin’s frog was discovered in 1834, and this book was written in the 1830’s.
There are other fun theories about the origin of the frog in the throat, I encourage you to dig your own rabbit hole.

Oh look! It's all my favorite people gathered together for opening night of my first group art show I've ever curated with @molocinus , "DIVINE MASCULINE" at @goodyeararts !

I had the best night celebrating forty amazing Charlotte artists and all of mine and Scotty's hard work! I am so grateful for my amazing friends and community who are so supportive and full of love! Thank you SO much to everyone who came out to the opening reception💚 Despite all these wonderful photos, there are so many people I wish I had gotten a picture with🥲

This past Friday was the opening of Divine Masculine at @goodyeararts curated by @onlyfromem and @molocinus 🖤❤️

I got to be alongside 40 or so other artists and create a piece and poem with a prompt that feels necessary to highlight and discuss, even more so with current headlines.

Everyone did a phenomenal job, and I enjoyed the reflection and feelings that came with each piece I spent time in front of. So many different viewpoints and experiences I am grateful I got to bear witness to and discuss with some of the their creators. I’m never going to get over being in rooms and shows like these 🥹

This piece of mine is called “Blooming in Spite” and will be available for purchase and viewing pleasure at @goodyeararts until 10/31 🖤❤️

What an evening last night! Thank you so much to everyone who came to support the Where the Wild Women Art Show! Last night was beyond fun and it was so good to see everyone!! Would like to give a big thank you to all of the artists in this year’s show, to @blackasthecosmos for bringing the vibes, to @jamos_vintage_ and @urgrlnabi for being the lovely vendors for the evening, and to @copperheadsocialclub for everything 🖤

✨Where the Wild Women Art Show returns September 26th @copperheadsocialclub!✨ This mixed media art show will highlight 21 incredible women artists who have contributed to the Queen City’s ever growing art community. PEACE FROG - inspired by the peace frog stickers I used to see on everyone’s trucks in the late 80s & 90s in MD/VA. Seeing the frogs and tadpoles in my lil pond is one of the ways I micro-dose peace every day. These creatures have fascinated me through my life .. but I’m really missing toads right now! Where’d they all go?!?
This is my lil mural for @pieceforpeace_movement at @taohoutdoorgallery for this past Sunday’s paint jam- what an amazing time!!! Being with our community of mural and graffiti artists is giving me inspiration and excitement I Reaaalllllyyyy need right now 🖤🖤🐸🐸🫟🫟

Thanks to @cltstreetartcollab for having me do my first live paint 😅 @cltshout this year. After isolating for so long, it was such a heartfelt reunion (TY Ali, Hobo, Kathleen!) with so many artist friends I’ve made over the past 6 years!
I had an idea for my piece and just let it flow during the event. It was so freeing to have little parameters yet terrifying being in the company of some crazy talented creatives.
I so appreciate all of the hugs, and the kind words by attendees. This day helped restore some faith in humanity and reaffirm the necessity of community art.
May the spirit of creativity always be with usl! Feel free to add your tag if you were there!
