Detroit has always been more than where we do business. It’s home.

I’m proud to have had the opportunity to serve as an Executive Producer of Etched in Pavement, a documentary that follows the lives of two young men from Southwest Detroit as they navigate fighting, fatherhood, loss, purpose and legacy.

Filmed over four years, the story follows Dwane Taylor and Michael Futrell through youth combat sports, professional boxing and the grassroots Guns Down, Gloves Up movement—using fighting not simply as sport, but as an avenue for community, purpose and something bigger than themselves.

I’m also proud that Zo’s Good Burger is a sponsor of the film. Since we started Zo’s in 2013, we’ve believed that being a Detroit-area business means being connected to the communities around us. Supporting local stories, people and projects that shine a light on our city is part of that commitment.

After a year of festival screenings, Etched in Pavement is coming home for its Detroit premiere tomorrow night at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

Congratulations to director John Sippel, Dwane, Michael and everyone who put years of work into bringing this story to life.

Detroit stories deserve to be told. I’m proud to have played a small part in helping tell this one.

Etched in Pavement official trailer is out!

This is a feature documentary directed by @jawnsippel that I had the joy of cutting alongside him. When I took on this editing project I had no idea what kind of journey it would lead me on over the past few years - but I’m so proud of this work and what this film means for Detroit, the families represented in this film, the legacy of Joe Louis, the fighting community, and just the everlasting idea of what it means to be a father and a leader. There are so many themes and layers to this complicated story - way more than just getting in the ring.

And now we are announcing the public premiere screening here in Detroit. After a run at festivals and tying up all the little details, it’s ready for a homecoming. Please join us on Sept. 29th at The Wright Museum for a special one-night screening. Tickets can be found over at @etchedinpavement.doc

Four time wold kick boxing champion Dino Newville. At 61 years old Dino fought last night for the first time in 21 years in a 4 round boxing event. A packed house showed up in Grand Rapids to help raise money for Dino’s faith based gym, Blues Gym, focused on at-risk youth. After weeks of dealing with the Worlds Boxing Association and the state trying to shut down the unsanctioned charity event, they pushed on to have a remarkable and powerful event. Words can’t describe the energy in that room, but you’ll see it soon enough.

Wheatpasted photo on wood, acrylic, crayon.

The day that the photo at the end of this carousel was taken changed a lot of lives. It certainly changed mine.

From Keith:
“You know, you got West side, East side. But we all came together for one, one good cause. So that’s what I looked at it as. Like if I’m part of this, I’m gonna build it with you. You know, it’s teaching kids there’s other outlets. When you’re in pain and you’re going through something and you’re struggling and you need help, there’s always something out there to pull you out.

You know, I felt worthless at one point. I felt like I was nothing but you guys showed me like, you know, I have value and I have a worth. It pulled me away from falling down into this black hole. I had people there with their hand out like come on, you got this. You know?“
