A wonderful example of how art can heal and help process. My adopted mama is an artist, ceramicist and potter. She’s been making an drawing these “girls” for as long as I’ve known her. Each year on special occasions, I get to select one. This year, on my 44th birthday, she gifted me this beauty. She’s beautiful. Her body is like mine. This year I was diagnosed with an another genetic connective tissue disorder called lipedema. It means my body looks different to others. The girl is bald. I also have alopecia, that means my hair looks different to others and sometimes I dont have much hair. She’s looking down. I’m autistic, and I dislike eye contact. She has a bird on her shoulder. My totem is a Garru (a magpie) and I have an attachment to them that is deeply important. She is fragile. Clay is easily breakable and it cracks easily, yet it’s derived from the earth itself and when fired withstands immense heat and pressure. It is transformed by that process. It is a dialect.
I don’t see myself ever reflected in media. I don’t see myself in the world. But I see myself in these creations born from a beautiful creative mind. Art is a powerful tool for identity. It can show us all the amazing and beautiful things about ourselves that the world deems ugly or broken or wrong. Through viewing the external image, we can step back and see its beauty. When that beauty is reflected, it can be processed internally.
I’m grateful for mama Elizabeth’s hands, who craft these representations of so many bodies so beautifully and of course, for the 25 years she has been in my life, to help shape who I am. Big love to her and my big sister for coming to visit me today, letting me be who I am and celebrating my 44th rotation around the sun - none of us ever thought I’d get here.

Its been a true honour designing this contemplation garden for my client and now friend, Elizabeth. The key feature of the garden was always going to be the large steel sculpture by Elizabeth's late son Luis Trujillo whose artworks informed every part of our design journey. The garden has been expertly constructed by Tye Purnell @backyardhabitatproject

The design builds on what was already a very leafy habitat garden, adding undulating small lawns that flow into beds of soft lime grasses with splatterings of orange and fuchsia in herbaceous perennials, bromeliads and cordylines for soft ombre layers. Elizabeth decided her seat should be a replica of one she always loved by her friend, the Port Kembla modernist sculptor Gino Sanguinetti (1906-2011) (pic 8 is one of his works) Orlando Norris did a fantastic job creating the replica from Elizabeth's sketch where she had added some symbolism of her own to Sanguinetti's design (pic 7) @littlewing_orlando The seat is white here, but is going to be repainted terracotta.

Like Elizabeth, Luis Trujillo (pic 2) was a prolific sculptor and painter, even with the significant challenge of his quadriplegia. The works I've seen are intricate, labrythine, jagged and dark. Elizabeth's sculptures and paintings feature organic shapes, human figures and rich colour. Both have made artwork of intense energy and emotion.

It will be a pleasure watching this garden evolve, and enjoying lots more conversations with Elizabeth surrounded by plants and art.
