Party With a Purpose Never Forget Our WHY!

Every Hampton University Homecoming, we celebrate more than memories. We honor a legacy!

Our brother Charlie Lamont Howerton of Danville, VA, was taken from us in 1993 due to senseless gun violence.

Charlie brought laughter, joy, and brotherhood to so many during his time at Hampton. His spirit lives on!

Ten years ago, I established an endowed scholarship in his honor to support an upperclassman from Virginia.

For the 9th straight year, we’re turning our Homecoming celebration into a Party With a Purpose, raising funds to keep Charlie’s legacy alive!

We also remember all those who poured into our lives and are no longer with us.

Gone but NEVER forgotten. Rest in Power, Brother Lamonte! 🙏🏾

Help us honor his legacy and invest in the next generation!

We know our WHY! “Hot” was one of his favorite songs!

Parents, popular does not always mean harmless.

Before we put a smartphone in a child’s hands, we should ask what it may take away: sleep, play, conversation, and time to learn from the world around them.

A developing mind deserves more than an endless scroll.

Protect their childhood. Set boundaries. Model being present.

Pick up a copy of Open Doors and discover how empathy, presence, and meaningful connection can transform the way you communicate.

Be where your feet are.

Empathy begins with presence. Put the phone down. Stop planning your response. Listen long enough to understand what the other person is feeling, not just what they are saying.

Rick Deadwyler Jr. reminds us that giving someone your full attention is one of the greatest signs of respect.

Money can be spent. Titles can disappear. Relationship capital keeps compounding.

Clay Goldsborough Jr. reminds us that the most valuable capital is built through trust, consistency, and genuine connection.

It is not just who you know. It is who knows your character, trusts your work, and will say your name in rooms you have not entered.

How much relationship capital are you building?

Confidence is not something you wait to feel. It is something you practice.

Take the shot. Walk across the room. Start the conversation.

Practice builds confidence. Confidence creates action. Action opens doors.

Success rarely travels in a straight line.

Clay Goldsborough Jr.’s journey moved from a dodgeball trophy to sales, entrepreneurship, setbacks, and eventually highly successful in the wealth management sector.

Every stop taught him something. Some experiences showed him what he could do. Others showed him what he never wanted to do again.

You do not need a perfect plan. You need the courage to start, the humility to learn, and the work ethic to keep moving.

The road may look random while you are traveling it. Later, the lessons connect.

You applied for the internship and unexpectedly meet the CEO. What do you say?

Don’t immediately ask for the job. Introduce yourself with confidence. Mention that you applied, express genuine interest in the company, and keep the conversation brief enough to be remembered for the right reasons.

The opportunity may last only 30 seconds. Preparation helps you make it count.

Parents: Stop fighting battles your child is strong enough to fight.

Our job is not to remove every hardship. Protect them from unnecessary harmbut allow them to struggle, make the call, have the uncomfortable conversation, and learn to advocate for themselves.

Constant rescue may feel like love, but it can quietly weaken confidence and resilience.

Sometimes the best way to help them grow is to step back.

Would you make the call or let your child make it?

Nobody reaches the top on talent alone. It takes hard work, resilience, and the discipline to keep going after failure.

A sponsor may open the door and say your name in rooms you haven’t entered, but your work ethic determines what you do once you get inside.

Turn failure into feedback. Keep showing up. Earn trust. Climb.

One conversation can change the direction of your life but only if you are present enough to recognize the opportunity.

Put the phone down. Listen with intention. Ask thoughtful questions. The person sitting across from you could become a mentor, sponsor, friend, or connection who opens your next door.

Rick Deadwyler Jr. shares why being fully present still matters.
