Kirkland Gallery is pleased to announce our first exhibition of the fall ‘26 season, 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘴 by Ethan Olson ( @ethans.log ). The exhibition will open this Friday at 4pm, refreshments will be served, come say hello! 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘴 is a celebration of the life and death of a Cambridge icon: the brick sidewalk. It’s a story of small disruptions, an interrogation of a material condition that begins with glacial deposits and ends—piece by piece—with the dislodgment and paving-over of history. Most accurately, however, it is a collection of over 300 bricks. Each one is sourced from the curbs, gutters, and tree pits of local neighborhoods. Naturally loosened from their pathway matrices, each brick becomes a detached object of study in the urban environment. The exhibition acts as a momentary archive of local history, a temporary reflection on the processes of discontinuity, and a fleeting congregation of a few hundred bricks. 40 Kirkland St. On view Oct. 16–Nov. 1

the question of car parks is really one of real estate; of land use and so if you begin to wonder about alternatives the possibilities really are endless. here are a collection of some ideas for the space of one parking bay by @ethans.log who says about his project: The average American parking space is 9’ wide x 18’ feet long. With upwards of 2 billion of these microsites located in this country alone, parking lots are prime opportunities for the creation of urban open space. This project uses vertical maneuvers (namely, the excavation of pits and the construction of vertical structures) to unseal the impermeable surface of one underutilized lot along Charlestown’s coastal edge to create atmospheric oases, set the stage for diverse social activities, and expand the critical zone between the lower atmosphere and upper crust that all life on this planet inhabits. - By using the shape and dimensions of existing parking spaces as inspiration for these punctual interventions, as well as later moves to aggregate these into a connected park, the project not only makes the land we’ve given up to automobiles legible, but also offers us a roadmap for taking it back. - Created for the @gsd_mla Core 4 studio: “The Near-Future City” #ourparking #parkinglot #carpark #parking

🧋💻 Architectural Works posted by @an.urban.ecologist ✍️ Nestled within the hilly terrain of Spanish Catalonia, the Igualada Cemetery subverts expectations about what constitutes a cemetery landscape and offers novel ideas for the future of the end. Upon first glance, one may assume that this space is an abandoned quarry of sorts, due in part to the architects’ selection of rugged materials employed throughout the site. Concrete structures, rock-filled gabions, steel sculptures, weathered wood, and informal dirt roads conjure industrial imagery representative of the cultural history of the surrounding region. Many of the interior spaces that one can amble through are built into the slope of the hillside itself, while mausoleum burial plots act almost as retaining walls that border bold descents into the lowest part of the site, and the heart of the cemetery itself. - The trek to the pit draws powerful parallels to many stories about descent after death, perhaps most notably Dante’s Inferno. (...) The sheer height of the walls that funnel visitors into the central basin form an enclosure that offers seclusion from the rush of the outside world while simultaneously providing mourners with a perfect frame of the sky above. A stark perceptual contrast is born out of this spatial organization - one between that of the underworld below and heaven above. The latter is highlighted by the former. 🧋💻 Architectural Drawings posted by @an.urban.ecologist ✍️ IMPRINTS IN THE GYRE: Axial Frames for Vanishing Currents of Life and Death at Franklin Park ___ Grief is a fluid process that does not resolve itself at any specific end. It is gradual, slow, and particular to the relationship held between the living and the departed. Yet it is also universal - a shared experience that is essential to the human condition. - This project identifies four prominent peaks in Franklin Park and imagines them as anchors within the turbulent storm of emotions that follows death. Circulating around these ritual spaces are landscapes of flux - zones of interment that are consecutively cleared to create meadows that are then populated with graves blanketed in aggregate. Once 100 graves are placed in a single zone, the remaining space is planted with vegetation in a polar grid. The effect is one of enclosure that increasingly tightens as a person moves higher up the hill until a clearing suddenly appears at the peak. This portal between the earth and the sky remains fixed as the interment zones around it fluctuate. The aggregate atop the graves subsides over time, creating shallow imprints that gradually disappear into the landscape as they pool with water, collect leaves, and become overgrown. The gyre of life gradually washes everything away. ___ created for the Core 2 Studio @harvardgsd @gsd_mla . ⭐️ Ethan . . . 🌱 For feature use #toffuco tag @toffuco 🌿 www.toffu.co . . . #artandarchitecture #architecturegraphics #architectureresearch #architecturalillustration #archi_students #architectureideas #architecturethesis #archihub #archdraw #archolution #archcollage #architectureonpaper #archimodel #archirender #archidrawing #archdetail #drawing_architecture #koozarch #architecturenow #designarchitecture #futurearchitect #actofmapping #postdigital #thinkingarchitecture #architecturedrawing #archade #archillustration

Go @an.urban.ecologist —— Nestled within the hilly terrain of Spanish Catalonia, the Igualada Cemetery subverts expectations about what constitutes a cemetery landscape and offers novel ideas for the future of the end. As one traverses down, the remains of the dead stand stacked tall beside them in their concrete shelves. Although this procession deeper and deeper into the site might be imagined as a morbid experience, it can also be imagined as a contemplative one. The sheer height of the walls that funnel visitors into the central basin form an enclosure that offers seclusion from the rush of the outside world while simultaneously providing mourners with a perfect frame of the sky above. A stark perceptual contrast is born out of this spatial organization - one between that of the underworld below and heaven above. The latter is highlighted by the former. GO @an.urban.ecologist —— ENCIRCLING THE EDGE ⭕️ — This project is about thickening the line that riverfront and urban edge share. As it sits today, Herter Park is an underutilized strip of land that suffers from its interfacial position, rather than taking advantage of it. The design responds to this failure by expanding the distance - both physically and perceptually - between Soldiers Field Road and the Charles River. Tangential, circular landforms separated by deep swales increase the linear space for stormwater runoff, riparian habitat, and human circulation from street to waterfront. Simultaneously, excavated earth from these incisions are used to create mounded topographies that increase the perceptual distance between the two margins. The result is a park that is receptive to the squeezing pressure of its context by acting as a filter that expands and contracts to address the temporal variations of hydrological, ecological, and social conditions. ___ Completed for the @gsd_mla Core 1 Studio at @harvardgsd
