Peter Gabriel left Genesis… and then made THIS?! 🤯🎹

After diving deep into Genesis, I finally explored Peter Gabriel’s
first solo album (1977), aka Car — and WOW.

The songwriting. The vocals. The arrangements. TONY LEVIN ON BASS. The London Symphony Orchestra?! 🤯

This album has so much of what I love about early Genesis, but it also made me realize just how much Peter Gabriel brought to the band as an artist, songwriter, and frontman.

I honestly think this might be my favorite record yet from the
post-Gabriel Genesis universe. 👀

As a bassist and lifelong music student, discovering albums like this
decades after they came out is one of the coolest parts of being a musician. This stuff genuinely changes how I hear and think about music.

ALSO… I started a new band inspired by progressive rock this week. 👀
More on that soon?!

👇 Genesis fans: where does Peter Gabriel’s solo career rank for you?

And which album should I listen to next?

Yep, just a regular guy. Sure, I write songs. I play instruments. I’m an “artist.” But I’m not a WEIRDO. If I were weird, would all of these people have sent me these video UNPROMPTED??? Something to think about.

My album Eddie is out now wherever you stream normal music. #songwriter #newmusic #funny #normal

Geddy Lee was absolutely COOKING on Hemispheres. 🔥🎸

Here’s a minute of me attempting one of my favorite sections from
“Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres” by Rush.

The deeper I’ve gotten into Rush, the more I appreciate just how
ridiculous Geddy’s bass playing is — not only technically, but
rhythmically. Playing these lines along with Neil Peart is a WORKOUT.

Rush fans: what’s your favorite bass moment on Hemispheres?

Bass players: throw your pedalboard in the garbage. 🗑️🎸
Okay, maybe don’t actually do that. 😂

I plugged a cheap Yamaha bass with flatwounds into a little Fender Mustang guitar amp and started messing around with the built-in sounds.

And something happened that I wasn’t expecting:
The sounds started changing the way I played.

Different tones made me improvise differently. I started playing melodies and ideas I probably wouldn’t have played with my normal bass sound. At one point the amp apparently decided I needed to play D’Angelo. 😂

It reminded me that sometimes the best thing you can do as a musician is just experiment.

Use the wrong amp.
Try the weird sound.
Turn some knobs.
Play the cheap bass.

Sometimes being inspired matters more than having the “right” gear.

Geddy Lee had NO BUSINESS being this funky. 😭

I’ve always thought this little section of “Territories” from Rush’s *Power Windows* is one of the funkiest things Geddy ever played.

So naturally… I had to slow it down and figure out what the hell he’s doing.

Turns out: it’s even cooler than I thought.

The Genesis Deep Dive begins. 🎸

I’m listening to EVERY Genesis studio album in chronological order,
starting all the way back in 1969 with From Genesis to Revelation.

And… THIS is Genesis?!

These guys were still teenagers, Phil Collins wasn’t even in the band
yet, and this sounds almost nothing like the Genesis I knew. But
knowing how young they were completely changed the way I heard this record.

This is only the beginning. 👀

I finally listened to Genesis’ *Selling England by the Pound*… and yeah, I have some thoughts.

As a bass player diving deeper into Genesis for the first time, I’m listening closely to Mike Rutherford’s bass playing, the songwriting, the ridiculous musicianship, and everything that makes this 1973 prog-rock classic so beloved.

This is just a taste of the full video. 👀
