Human dignity and resilience: she lost almost everything, and she started again. 💚

Eny Aladekoba (@itz_sweetrachy) shares what dignity means to her:

“To me, dignity means knowing that I have value, regardless of my circumstances. It is the courage to keep going when life becomes difficult, and the strength to ask for help without allowing hardship to define who I am.”

“Losing my father and my job, followed by the loss of the little goods I had invested in my foodstuffs business, was painful. But I chose not to give up. I started again with the little I had.”

What her story teaches us:
• Loss does not erase your value
• It is brave to ask for help
• Start again with what you have
• Respect is for every human

Human rights and human dignity: why respecting rights makes all of us better. 💚

Human rights are not just laws. They are how dignity becomes real. Here’s what leading scholars say:

1️⃣ Respect: Philosopher Jürgen Habermas argues that human dignity is the moral source from which every basic right draws its meaning (Metaphilosophy, 2010).

2️⃣ Freedom: Nobel laureate Amartya Sen shows that freedoms, to speak, learn, work and take part, are both the goal of development and the way it happens (Development as Freedom, 1999).

3️⃣ Equality: Martha Nussbaum argues that a life worthy of human dignity needs real opportunities, like health, education and a voice, not just rights on paper (Creating Capabilities, 2011).

4️⃣ Justice: Political scientist Beth Simmons found that when governments commit to human rights treaties, citizens use those promises to win real change, including gains in girls’ education (Mobilizing for Human Rights, 2009).

It all starts with Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”

150 strong! Human dignity, from Flatbush to the world. 🎉💚

Thank you, family. We grew from 133 to 150 followers, and every one of you is part of this story.

Here is what dignity means to me:

Dignity is not violating others’ dignity while keeping your own.

It is having direction and the freedom to make honest choices, without being pushed or forced by lack. When people are pushed by need, their dignity is already being violated.

Constant light. Clean water. Shelter. Good hospitals. Good roads. Security. Fair pay. Opportunities. Respect. Honoring one another.

Give people this, and you don’t just grow a nation. You heal a dignity that has been violated.

Human dignity in Africa: when you show up, children shine. ✨💚

In Kigali, Rwanda, young dancers, singers and drummers of @sherriesilverfoundation performed for @heisrema, and their tears of joy said it all. Thank you @sherriesilver for giving young talent a stage.

What it teaches us about dignity:

Presence is a gift. Your time tells someone they matter.
Every child deserves a stage. Talent grows when it is given room.
Being seen restores dignity. Every voice deserves to be heard.
This is why Dignity Must Be Heard Inc. exists: so every voice, young or old, gets the room to be heard.

Who showed up for you when it mattered? Tell us in the comments and tag them. 👇🏾

Every girl deserves to be heard. 💚 Happy International Day of the Girl!

Human dignity starts with listening, and girls are too often the last to be asked what they think.

Around the world, about 1 in 5 girls is married before age 18 (UNICEF). This year the world is calling to end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights.

When a girl is heard:

She stays in school
She makes her own choices
She is safe to speak up
She lifts her whole community
Girls and women, finish this sentence: “Dignity means...” Comment GIRL with your answer, and tag a girl you believe in. 👇🏾
