Deep House Stories with Deep House Legend Jenifa Mayanja. Part 1 (Jenifa’s first contact with Music)

I heard Jenifa Mayanja for the first time while I was driving my bike on my way to university while living in Berlin.

Berlin is a vibrant city, alive and crazy. Back then a strong movement of Detroit House exponents was prevailing in the city and for me, Berlin was a music heaven. As I was getting to know House Music through my experiences in the city, I had by that time, only heard male Producers and DJs.

That is why, when I heard Jenifa’s Mix for the well-known Beats in Space Podcast, I was thrown away. I heard for the first time a woman who was at the same level as those DJs who were my shining examples of that genre (Theo Parrish, Mike Huckaby, Omar S, Kyle Hall, FIT, Marcellus Pittman…).

What I did not know, was that Jenifa Mayanja has over 25 years in the music industry. She was since the beginning New York’s Deep House and helped it evolve. She had played in world renowned clubs like Panorama Bar, Fabric London, Djoon and Lux Lisbon among many other and that she owned a Record Label was a Music Mentir and a full-time mom.

She was the first of several women with whom I felt identified and represented as a woman.
