THE WIREGRASS comes out tomorrow!

These kind words from @ev_rat_public just came in. His book The Mastermind is simply such a great book. I read it in a dumbstruck combination of wonder that it had all actually happened, amazement that he’d learned the ins and outs of the story, and admiration for his ability to tell it so artfully. I have gifted this book countless times, and if you have not read it, I urge you to buy a copy!

Journalist Evan Ratliff built a startup where every executive was an AI agent. A CEO, a head of sales and marketing, even a Chief Happiness Officer.

So, was this a powerful new team? Or was it missing the human touch? The AI agents were able to process basic tasks (with mixed success), but the results revealed more about where AI's capabilities fall flat, and the power of human led collaboration.

👀 Watch this month's Straight from the Source with Mary Lynn Fayoumi and Ben OPP to dig into the future of work, and what we can accomplish with our AI collaborators.

As the AI boom continues, America's legal system finds itself grappling with cases where chatbots act as lawyers, witnesses or even allegedly help plan a mass shooting.

ev_rat_public joins @svaneksmith and @mchafkin on the Everybody's Business podcast to discuss how US courts are dealing with AI's involvement in crimes. Tap the link in bio to listen to the full episode of Everybody's Business.

The better AI knows you, the more useful it can become.

But that raises a question we probably aren’t asking enough: How much of yourself are you willing to give it?

For AI to become your “therapist,” your confidant, or even something resembling a friend, it needs context. Your history. Your relationships. Your fears. Your patterns. Your conversations. The things you might not tell anyone else.

And we’re adopting these relationships faster than we’re learning what they might do to us.

We don’t yet have the long-term evidence to fully understand what relying on AI for companionship, emotional support, or therapy could mean for our behavior and our real-world relationships.

In this conversation with Shell Game creator Evan Ratliff, we explore the strange territory we’re entering as AI gets better at knowing (and imitating) us.

The technology is moving fast, so the ethical questions need to keep up.

We celebrated the 2025 winners of the Sloan Student Prizes at a reception and staged reading at @movingimagenyc. @quinnspicker’s feature script God Makers received the Sloan Grand Jury Prize and @nokaye’s feature script The Head Cases received the Sloan Discovery Prize. Both winners also joined journalist @ev_rat_public on stage for a conversation about their projects.

Administered by the Museum of the Moving Image, the Sloan Student Prizes aim to advance the professional paths of diverse, emerging filmmakers as they transition from school into the film industry. For the past 26 years, Sloan has awarded annual screenwriting prizes at six partner film schools, and each school nominates one winning candidate for the best-of-the-best Grand Jury Prize. The Discovery Prize represents an expansion of the Sloan film program to six public universities who each submit an original screenplay that has not previously won a Sloan prize.

God Makers, written by the American Film Institute’s Quinn Spicker, tells the true story of the battle between academic researcher Helen Toner and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over the future of AI. The Head Cases, written by Brooklyn College’s Nora Kaye, follows two brilliant women scientists who overcome their differences to test an unorthodox Alzheimer’s treatment.

Thank you to the jury who selected these winners: filmmaker Jonathan Bogarín (306 Hollywood), Dr. Gabriela Chiosis (The Gabriela Chiosis Lab at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center), Dr. Justus Kebschull (The Kebschull Lab at John Hopkins University), filmmaker Robert Kolodny (The Featherweight), filmmaker Eliza McNitt (SPHERES), filmmaker Tasha Van Zandt (A Life Illuminated), and Team ORCA founder Dr. Edie Widder.

The jury also awarded an honorable mention to Grand Jury Prize finalist SLEDHEAD by @elliemelick from Carnegie Mellon University, a feature script about an athlete who risks her career to help neurological researchers investigate the damage sports can cause to the brain.

Congratulations to this year’s winners!

On the latest Aboard Podcast, @ev_rat_public told @ftrain2000 some of his biggest AI takeaways making Shell Game, in which he started a company that was staffed entirely by bots—until the bots hired a single human employee.

"I found that whole process fascinating," Evan says. "This is a thing from the sort of near future that we're kind of pulling into the present."

On the latest episode of the Aboard Podcast, @ftrain2000 asked @ev_rat_public what he missed most about working with humans at the all-bot company he created for Shell Game.

"I think the thing I probably missed most was just a general sense of truthfulness," Evan says. "You give agents a role, and they will embody that role. And oftentimes they will embody that role to the detriment of the truth."
