Between reportage and visual work.
Soon, this site will disappear. Even though it is an integral part of Kayes and the families who live there. As a duty of memory, we must carry out an archival work, in order to preserve a part of this history. It

is also the last opportunity to talk about these mines, too often neglected in the media in favor of gold or gas mines, which are much more dangerous. However, on the contrary, the mines of Kays provide wealth that directly benefits the inhabitants, locals, workers.
Aesthetically, what makes this place interesting are its materials, its colors, and its architectural construction. The way the workers build the galleries, trace a path, leave their mark in the stratified sand. The tunnels rise in height, in length, they define the photographic frame. They give us the possibility to capture their globality but move out of the field, like the workers who dig according to what the sand dictates, what it has to offer.
Suite du projet.
Two photographic series will come. The first one, documentary, would be a continuation of the work presented, a highlighting of the prints of the sand, the architecture, the tunnels, but also portraits of these last workers of Kayes. The second, fictional, will stage different elements in this theater that could receive a last and new look.
"Currently in a research phase, I am thinking of creating costumes inspired by this place, but more broadly of the Mandingue culture and modernity that Mali is seizing. I think that this place, soon to be destroyed, can perfectly represent the rupture between the past and the present, a transition, a new page, a new chapter.” Crédit photo @phototigui
