TRAVELLER (part 6)

If you are setting people free, what obligation do you have to the real people who were unwittingly their prison?

@mrjessewatt navigated this scene beautifully.
Thankyou to the crew who came back to do this a second time. @callmerasmus - makes me wistful for the rasmorphic gh5.

TRAVELLER (part 3)

The narrator is seen watching a man at night. The man is talking to another. She senses something takes place. He leaves. She follows.

After a largely narration guided intro, a wordless scene. I remember filming this at the end of a 40 degree day in late 2019. K-pop acts were all around us, and the LED wall we were using required difficult sight lines that were very hard to make work.

I was very grateful to @callmerasmus , @evanoirofficial , Jason (I hope you’re well mate) and @reubentir for their patience throughout the evening.

As an editor, these are the scenes I like the most. A dance of eyes. Watching the watcher. I was raised to be a Bressonian, and the Kuleshov effect is never far away. I remember saying to @mrjessewatt that this scene might not need music until the end, and then he did this. The long and careful work with @sydneysoundbrewery to get the thunder, distant skateboard sounds, impressionistic trains and breath in the right proportion makes it one of my favourite minutes.

My Innovation Lab students of years past, and my screen studies students will often remember the 5 obstructions exercise- where one of the obstructions is to build a story backwards from an assigned location. This production’s budget was surprisingly low because we worked backwards from location.

TRAVELLER (part 2)
“In the City, there is a man. They say he knows how to go to other places. And if you see another world, he can show you how to go there. They call him Traveller.”

TRAVELLER (part 1)
“The City is all we know. We come to it, and we never leave.”

2019 was the year the scales of SFS fell from my eyes and it was clear I needed to stop sacrificing for careless people.
In the midst of that, Rasmus Callmer helped me begin the process of finding the form again. It had been years since I had directed, and while there’d been hundreds of shorts I’d advised in that time, it was like learning it all again.
I started with a sequence from Traveller as I felt it contained scenes that I would need to make more than once. Reflecting on it now, it feels possible this may be as much as the world ever sees of Traveller, and if this is the only evidence of the idea, it might not communicate so clearly what it was all about. However what I think is strong here, and was always strong, is that in a story about people fleeing their reality to other worlds, the camera was always firmly trained on those who were left behind.
Much of this sequence comes from a period when I was filming extensively with a Bolex camera using TriX 16mm stock (cross processed). It was shot in 2011-2012, and Karan- now an established video artist with his own international practice - was still in Sydney after his time at SFS. I did not imagine that it would appear in this context 8 years later.
Enjoy. Follow the link in bio if you’d like to see the whole thing.

Daddy I'm Your Lucky Star

Abandoned Lila (@CharingDraper) finds an unexpected family with billionaire Jonathan Blackwood (@RichardSharrah), but secrets soon change everything.

✨ My Thoughts
Daddy I'm Your Lucky Star is, at its heart, a story about family, not always the family you're born into, but the family that chooses to love, protect, and accept you.

Lila is the emotional center of the series. Charing brings warmth and heart to the role, while her ability to communicate with animals adds a charming fantasy element. More scenes exploring her connection with animals and the full extent of her abilities would have been a welcome addition.

Richard brings a quiet kindness to Jonathan Blackwood. His journey from grieving widower to devoted father figure creates some of the series' most heartfelt moments, and his growing bond with Lila forms the emotional foundation of the story.

Noah's grief, silence, and gradual healing add another layer to the family dynamic, though more time exploring his journey could have made it even more impactful.

@JamieMunsey's Vivienne creates much of the conflict through her determination to marry Jonathan, while Karen and Harold constantly make life difficult for Lila. Their greed and mistreatment make them easy villains to dislike. It's frustrating to watch so many adults ignore what is happening to Lila, only changing their attitudes once they discover her background and who has adopted her.

Some storylines move a little too quickly and could have benefited from more time with the characters and their emotions.

A warm, uplifting story that refreshingly blends family drama, magic, and found family themes.

Once upon a time, a guy named @aliafsharesx moved to LA in his late teens. I followed him months later. Flash forward a few years and I worked for his brother at Jerry's Famous Deli with my coworker @ladychristinamoore. Flash forward again and years later Christina and Ali were Producers at Ali's company @esxentertainment where they have invited me to play in a good number of their films over the years.

This new one @thedoubletroublemovie is something special for the whole family. The premiere was last night, and I got to reunite with some of my favorite people throughout my LA journey. Old and new friends who came to support, co-stars and crew, and I have been so grateful. I know you will all love this film and see some familiar faces.

Congrats to the director @directorshaunpiccinino and the casting team @treadwellkellycasting along with writer/actor @johnducey and producer @daniel_aspro. Will tag as many of you as I am able, but please know I am proud of all of you who made the film and so thankful to my friends who came to show love!

Also, freaking Andrew Koji blew my socks off as a comedic lead. I have only known him as an action star, but he is incredibly funny in this!

It’s truly our favorite time of the week. We love you all so very much!!! Thank you for letting us teach you!!! So honored and blessed to be on this journey with all of you!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Be you!! ✨ Welcome Eva to TPG Talent ✨

Eva and I go way back—we first met on the set of a feature film, and from that very first experience, she left an impression on me. There is an undeniable allure about her that draws people in. It’s not just her striking presence on camera; it’s her intelligence, grace, professionalism, and authenticity (and maybe a little of her accent ☺️).

A Paris-born American/French actress, Eva brings a unique depth to every role she takes on. Her beautiful French accent, fluency in both English and French, and natural ability to connect with audiences make her super special. She is incredibly educated, endlessly creative, and so talented it’s honestly hard to put into words.

What excites me most is that I know we’re just getting started together as a team!

I’m beyond thrilled to officially welcome Eva to the TPG Talent family and can’t wait to help her soar to new heights. The future is bright, and I have no doubt that the industry is going to continue taking notice of the incredible artist she is.

Please join me in giving Eva a warm welcome!
