First insect photos with the new lens!

Halloween Pennants perch on tall grass (pictured) and twigs, swinging in the breeze like flags. They were given the name “pennant” as a result.

These dragonflies feed on mosquitos, gnats, and other small insects.

These Canadian Geese goslings are getting big!

Goslings are born with the ability to walk, swim, and eat, and they only need 8-10 weeks to reach full adult size.

These goslings were traveling with both parents, foraging for food along the Raritan Bay coastline.

🌊 Over two days, 20 middle schools joined Clean Ocean Action at the Sandy Hook Student Summit this Wednesday and Thursday for an unforgettable trip to the shore for hands-on learning and exploration!

Middle schoolers dove into roundtables led entirely by the powerhouse juniors and seniors of the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST), who stepped into their teacher hats for the day. These future scientists and leaders guided discussions on marine life, pollution prevention, conservation, and advocacy, inspiring younger students to spark a lifelong love for nature.

MAST students also supported field trips across the park alongside expert naturalists and partners from the American Littoral Society, Jenkinson’s Aquarium, Shark Research Institute, Save Our Whales, and Green Acres, helping bring each lesson to life.

Huge waves of gratitude to our COA Ambassadors, longtime volunteers, and, of course, our new fabulous summer interns and mentees who helped make the day possible.

A special thank‑you to Gateway National Recreation Area – Sandy Hook, for supporting the Student Summit for decades and providing an outdoor classroom filled with lessons students will carry for a lifetime.

And to our supportive sponsors, Eloise & John Pound in memory of Anne Inman Webster, and the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) for making this program possible.

🔗 COA’s Student Summits are FREE for schools (participants only cover transportation and lunch). Learn more on our website.

Who doesn’t love mallards?

They’re the most abundant ducks in the world. This one is male, as evident by the green head, while females are brown and striped.

American Oystercatchers are monogamous shore birds that sometimes mate for life. Occasionally, in areas with high populations, they may form trios, with one male and two females.

This pair has been found twice (so far) at Raritan Bay Waterfront Park in South Amboy, NJ.

A great egret captures a minnow at Raritan Bay Waterfront Park.

Great egrets typically eat fish, as seen here. They also feed on aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals and birds.

Did you know the European Starling is an invasive species?

In 1890, a Shakespeare fanatic named Eugene Schieffelin released about 100 into Central Park, NY, because he believed the US should have every bird listed in Shakespeare’s works.

Opportunistic eaters, they can forage entire wheat fields, causing major agricultural damage. And these highly aggressive and territorial nesters often break the eggs of native birds or forcibly remove them from their nests.

With 200+ million in North America and counting, the European Starling is definitely here to stay. You can find them across NJ at all times of year.

Red-winged blackbird!

Males are black with a small red and yellow patch on their shoulder. Oddly, females are brown.

These birds prefer marshes and standing water. In South Amboy (Middlesex County), they perch in reedy areas by Raritan Bay Waterfront Park.

They can be skittish and hard to capture, especially in flight.
