Bob and I dedicated a lot of time to being in the mountains this season. Many hours in the rig. Many hours hiking up, just together or with friends. Many hours honing in on our skills and deepening what it means to be backcountry partners ☺️

Last weekend we did a hut trip in one of our national parks, with a rad crew from Patagonia. We talked product, we ate all of the cheese, lines straight out the door, played silly games, and no one snored too loud!

Ever since I moved to Cody in the fall of 2019 I haven’t done much (really any) traveling in the winters. It’s my favorite season to be home, and it’s hard to want to make plans to leave when the backyard scene is so good. But this winter I’ve gotten to do some traveling for work and play thanks to @patagonia and @lasportivana. First was a great few days of climbing and brainstorming with a fantastic Patagonia crew in Bozeman in January, then came my first days ever climbing in the eastern US at the @mwv_icefest in early February, rounded out by clinics, a presentation, and some exceptionally fun climbing at the Adirondack Mountainfest the following weekend. Some climbing highlights from the trips included:
1-2: Matriarch (Hyalite) with @kellycordes.
3: The Revenant (Hyalite) with @evantdaniel and @lindenmallory.
4: Super Goofers/Big Flush (Cathedral Ledge) solo post-clinic at the @mwv_icefest.
5-6: second complete free ascent and first in-a-day free ascent (from what we were told) of Across the Great Divide (Cannon Cliff) with @ianwelsted.
7-9: R2D1 (Repentance, Remission, and Deidre on Cathedral Ledge) with @ianwelsted.
10: a thin Power Play Direct (Chapel Pond) with @matthewdhorner and @kbmbarn.
11: new route “Absolute Power” on the upper tier of the Power Play wall with @matthewdhorner and @kbmbarn.
Big thanks to everyone who shared a rope, and to @patagonia @lasportivana @mwv_icefest and @mountaineerbandana for getting me out to some very neat zones!

Where did the Vanlife hashtag come from?

We’ll, right here in my 2005 Sprintervan, April 6th, 2013 by @fosterhunting.

This was a Patagonia design offsight in the Alabama Hills with @fosterhunting, @chris_malloy_yarning, @the.rabbits.foot, @evantdaniel, John Rapp and myself. Foster suggested we try and come up with a new hashtag for Instagram. We all asked, “What’s a hashtag?” Foster tried to explain it but it fell on deaf ears. I wasn’t on instagram yet, none of us were. So he kinda dropped it. Then, an hour or so later he, while having coffee in my van, he said, “How bout Vanlife?” We said sure, whatever. Now, just like that, 15.8 million tags later, #vanlife is permanently embedded in our cultural lexicon.

Fall 2018 prototype meeting with the @patagonia technical design team. This was also one of our first looks at the revamped #micropuff jacket (amongst some other unique products) and a monumental day for my inner gear nerd.
