I had the opportunity to participate in a fascinating discussion on socialism with @johnstossel on Elizabeth Vargas’s show on @newsnationnow. Thank you @joinyoungvoices and @dissidentproj for providing me with such great opportunity.

A few takeaways:

1. Many Americans confuse socialism with wanting affordable housing, healthcare, and better public services. These are legitimate demands, especially amid the post-COVID economic uncertainty and the rise of AI. But wanting a stronger social safety net doesn’t necessarily mean wanting socialism. And no, European economies aren’t socialist either, FYI. (I lived there!)

2. I’m struck by how little some passionate advocates of socialism know about countries like Cuba and Venezuela. Hearing young Americans repeat arguments eerily similar to Ayatollah Khomeini’s rhetoric is unsettling. His regime devastated Iran and forced millions, including me, to leave.

3. Above all, I’m grateful to live in a country where we can openly disagree, challenge ideas, and debate politics on national television without fearing persecution. That wasn’t my experience in Iran.

Fight for a fairer society. But don’t romanticize ideologies without studying their history or listening to those who lived through their consequences.

Love you all 🩷
