🇩🇪 LIEDER — OMA, I FINALLY DID MY HOMEWORK 🌳🎤

A kind stranger chose “Despacito” for our duet. She spoke Spanish, English and German; I brought enthusiasm. 😂 Then I asked for a song my childhood German might survive. Her answer: “Lieder”.

🎤
Oma said “study”; I climbed a tree,
sure that the branches would set me free.
Years later, a song led me back to the ground;
the words I once dodged became part of the sound.

Oma decía «estudia»; yo quería trepar,
creía que las ramas me podían liberar.
Años después, una canción me hizo bajar;
las palabras que evitaba me invitaron a cantar.

My German? Still shit. My gratitude? Fluent. 😅
Three other Germans joined in like a chorus. Different generations, shared laughter. Nobody needed perfection to make the moment worth remembering.

“Lieder” means “songs”. The image of dancing with tears in your eyes stays with me: joy and tenderness don’t cancel each other.

I used to climb away from Oma’s lessons. Now kindness has brought me back to them. Maybe heritage isn’t an exam we pass. Sometimes it’s a voice we recognise before we can answer fluently.

🎤
Different beginnings, one shared song;
we miss a few words and still sing along.
No passport decides how a friendship can start;
a language means more when it reaches the heart.

Distintos comienzos, un mismo cantar;
fallamos palabras, seguimos sin parar.
Ningún pasaporte decide una amistad;
la lengua llega al alma si hay sinceridad.

Polish, German, Quechua, Mapuche, Spanish, Chilean… mestizo. More family stories another day; a little mystery won’t hurt. 😉

Gracias to my duet partner, the chorus, and Oma. Apparently I had to cross an ocean to attend German class. 😂
Oma, I ran from the lessons—not from the love.

What song takes you home to a part of yourself?
