Grateful that I was still able to complete the Dutch entry for the Venice Biennale by Dries Verhoeven as commissioner and very proud of the team of the Mondriaan Fund.

Very happy as well with the opening of the pavilion by the king and queen of The Netherlands. And it was a great honor to offer them the first copy of the historic book on 130 years of the Dutch Pavilion in Venice.

Even the most committed republican art professionals are impressed when they experience the dedicated attention and involvement of the royal couple — and there is nothing wrong with that.

Even if the monarchy is not your thing, the support of the king and queen remains important. Their support increases public appreciation for culture and strengthens the sector. It also shows The Netherlands cares for artistic freedom.

And let's face it, we can use some royal defense when it comes to the public support of culture.

It was also good that they visited the contribution from Ukraine. The Ukrainian Minister of Culture Tetyana Berezhna was extremely pleased with the involvement and support of our king and queen, and with the special attention Minister Letschert devoted to the Russian aggression in her speech.

The Ukrainian artwork at the entrance of the Giardini is a powerful image. The origami deer, symbolizing independence after Soviet domination, had been carried away to prevent the Russians from destroying it.
In the Giardini, it hung suspended in the air, waiting to return to where it belongs, while provocatively facing the Russian Pavilion.

Back from Japan

We took twenty artists to the Aichi Triennale as part of the Biennale Voucher. Goal is to enable artist to expand their international network and to boost their international position by encouraging their presence at important international events like that of the Aichi Triennale in Nagoya Japan.

The Dutch Embassy in Tokyo was of great help in setting up a program that took us and the voucher artists to several interesting institutions, from the Mori Art Museum to the National Art Center Tokyo.

The Aichi Triennale, curated by Hoor Al Qasimi, was a feast. It has two mayor locations; The Aichi Art center in Nagoya and the Aichi Perfectural Ceramic Museum in Seto, as well as several small ones in the center of Seto. Oh and yes, we sang karaoke as well.

We left our artist to network by themselves and visited the three artists in residencies the Mondriaan Fund currently offers in Japan. Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto, Arts Initiative Tokyo in Tokyo and the very famous Arita ceramic residency in Arita.

Arita is part of the Perfecture of Saga, home to many other craft based settlements. We got a crash course of washi-paper production (not as easy as it seems), in preparation of a new artist in residency to be launched in 2026.

We got blessed in the Dazaifu Tenmangu temple, a place where worship meets contemporary arts, we visited a kimono textile factory, a miso factory, a furniture company and the Design East Fair in Osaka.

Lastly we were lucky to be granted a VIP visit to the World Expo, where 2 to 300.000 visitors a day fill the areas between the different pavilions and sustainability is often both the common theme as the common problem.

It was wonderful to experience how important the Mondriaan Fund is considered in Japan. It was a marvellous trip with endless impressions but mostly I am grateful for all worthwhile conversations we were granted with so many beautiful people.

And a big thank you to @valckxbas and his colleagues from the Dutch embassy in Japan.

Ik kreeg bezoek van Emma. Emma wilde van alles weten over ons nieuwe beleidsplan en ook gelijk een beetje rondlopen op het Mondriaan Fonds. Dat begrijp ik best. Het is daar heel fijn.

Thursday, I had the priviledge to join representatives of the islandic art world in a conference at the Reykjavik Art Museum. In Iceland they are looking for the good steps foward for their cultural funding structure and I was happy to give some insights in how the Mondriaan Fund was organised, its function within the Dutch context and the goals for the future.

And I got see a volcano erupting thanks to Sigríður Sigurjónsdóttir

Wat een fantastische ervaring. In twee weken samen met de collega rijkscultuurfondsen alle eilanden in het Caribisch deel van het koninkrijk bezocht. Prachtige gesprekken, mooie ontmoetingen en bijzondere ervaringen.

We presenteerden rijkscultuurfondsen.org, leerden over de grote verschillen tussen de eilanden en hoorden terug wat onze inspanningen van de afgelopen jaren hebben opgeleverd, en welke behoeften er nog leefden.

Afgelopen vrijdag was bij Pennings Foundation in Eindhoven de drukbezochte launch van Scratching the Surface, de essaybundel van het Mondriaan Fonds over Streetart.

Over het belang van (il)legaliteit, context, menselijke verhoudingen, identiteit en het belang van erkenning.

Voor wie er niet was; we hebben gelukkig de foto's nog (en de essaybundel zelf).

Op werkbezoek bij Cool Clay Collective, een keramiekwerkplaats opgezet door kunstenaars uit Rotterdam.

Het Cool Clay Collective biedt kunstenaars een werkplaats met keramiek-ovens voor groot en kleiner werk. Om zo binnen het medium keramiek de mogelijkheid tot experimentele vernieuwing en hoogwaardige kunstproductie te stimuleren.

Mooi initiatief!
